Speaking of bells..
Q3. If you have a bell, what the different things that you try to communicate when you ring it? (or honk, if it's a horn, etc) What percent of the time are you trying to communicate what?
(For example, a bell ring could mean a "hello", a "pardon me", a "get out of my way", a "please don't hit me", and so on)
A3. It’s probably “hello” 75% of the time for me and the rest of the time it’s as kind of a “I’d like to get through” as possible. Re: the “hello”, it’s usually to friends / friendly strangers, or just a friendly acknowledgement of someone heading towards me riding their cycle in the other lane.
I have a cycle without a bell and found myself missing it when I wanted to say hi to someone!
I should add, most of my riding is on residential and commercial district streets, and rarely multi use paths.
