Martin JRM Mars "Philippine Mars" touches down in the SF Bay, today Sunday February 9th, 2025 while a Emirates A380 taxis at KSFO

I like the third one. If you look in the upper left corner you can see a Emirates A380 taxiing at SFO on the other side of the bay

@cvvhrn is there any word on when it'll take off for San Diego and what route it'll fly? I'm guessing it'll fly over or near Monterey where we are...

@douglasvb No I assume in the morning but am hearing they may pass on San Diego and go right to Arizona

@cvvhrn with the storm coming in on Tuesday, they might not want to get stuck in the bay for a week.

@cvvhrn pure speculation but I suppose if going direct to Arizona, they would fly through Pacheco Pass or maybe up the Delta towards Sacramento and then down the central valley and over Tehachapi.

Do you know where they're landing in Arizona? I think the original plan was to cut it into pieces and haul it by truck to the air museum...

@douglasvb The cut up part remains the plan. The landing spot is a bit of a Mystery.

It has to be big enough to land the plane PLUS have the roadways needed for all those trucks and wide loads

@cvvhrn is it only setup for water landing? That would really cut down the number of places in Arizona it could land.

@cvvhrn wow that limits things significantly and also changes the game in terms of diversion airports. Maybe Lake Pleasant north of Phoenix. Or Lake Theodore Roosevelt or San Carlos Reservoir although both of those don't have great highway access. Otherwise Lake Mead or Lake Powell?

@douglasvb @cvvhrn There's no plans to fly it once it lands in Arizona?! Wow, lots of work to just fly it to a museum and never fly it again.

@ai6yr @douglasvb They will have to cut the wings off her so she will never take to the air.

It is a noteworthy enough and rare air frame that most will go through the hassle and there only a few museums directly on the coast. Even the MOF in Seattle is not.

Also its a huge air frame and most air parks are maxed out for space so Pima is perfect in that aspect

@cvvhrn @ai6yr the Pima museum is truly impressive with what they've got there. I visited last winter when I was in Tucson for a conference.

@douglasvb @cvvhrn
Maybe the pres could open some faucets to provide water for it.

@godzero @douglasvb rights, then again how much water does AZ have???

@cvvhrn @douglasvb
Maybe a couple of gallons 🤷‍♂️
I'm sure he could figure out how to get it from NorCal.

@godzero @cvvhrn they could pump a bunch via the Central Arizona Project and build a temporary lake to land in but that would be an awfully complicated and expensive endeavor. Although with all the savings from no more pennies...

@douglasvb @cvvhrn A month-old Colson post said it would take off after 2 days, & the Chronicle article said it would take off Tue., but I can’t find anything definite

@cvvhrn That’s a great photo! Thanks for the rabbit hole I just fell down.

@c_dan4th lol those are always the best kind of rabbit hole
