There’s a lot that’s confusing about Mastodon, almost so much so that I wish there was some way to contribute either from a UX or dev perspective.
The lack of progress clarity when a post has been submitted is like the low level “I wonder what’s going on here?” but the “you can’t join where everyone else is joining…but it’s okay you don’t need to worry about that” is probably the biggest high level usability issue to address.
