I'm trying to dust off my ancient #wordpress #blog, and I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that wordpress and the wordpress community don't care about blogs anymore.
All the themes look like ecommerce sites. I don't want that.
It's bad enough the editor is now the visual editor that is *really* pushing a bunch of post types that never made any sense to me, let alone "boxes" or whatever the editor calls them seem to do their damnedest to not let anyone see any html ever.
Want to paste in an embed? Why would you do that? Pick one of these 15 embed buttons. Bruh? Like wha?
it doesn't help that it appears that widgets are constantly breaking the themes now. Breaking them hard enough that the site crashes.
FML.
Maybe I should just delete the whole thing and reinstall.
At least I fixed the unicode an emoji issues.

@jonathankoren I've switched to Hugo for everything I can. It's lovely to be able to dump stuff on the cheapest hosting, a random VirtualHost on a VM I already maintain for other stuff, or literally free hosting like Github pages and have it be crazy fast with zero effort no matter how much traffic it gets. A static website can be served to a million daily visitors using the computing power of a smart watch (actually less). I still have a WordPress site (for ecommerce!), but not for blogs/docs.
@swelljoe I don’t think that’s what I want. I don’t want to fire up a command line, and I don’t care about QPS. I want to be able to use my phone, and I certainly don’t want to sysadmin anything.
I will say, the worst WP theme I found last night was a grid of titles and every page hit you with a loading interstitial. wut?
@jonathankoren yeah, it's not for everyone. It suits me, and I am able to make changes in git (github has a Markdown editor), even on my phone, but I can see how it wouldn't suit everyone. It's definitely a nerdier tool for the job than WordPress.
But, the pain of WordPress is notable. It's gotten so large and so enshittified to funnel people into buying plugins, that it's downright painful to use these days.
@jonathankoren Yes. That's the situation for a long time now. It's great that you have all these possibilities. But there should be a simple theme that basically works and looks great with a text-only blog.
All the themes only look great because there are great photos in the demos.
@jonathankoren There is a wonderful plugin called disable gutenberg which is a must! More powerful & flexible than the clasic editor plugin. Also the whole principle of backward compatibility & no breaking changes doesn't seem to apply to Gutenberg
@dalereardon I ended up breaking my site for the first time ever when I switched themes last night.
Something went wrong with the widgets. I ended up hacking the code so it wouldn’t load them, and had to delete them all. For some reason I had like eight version of each widget. No idea how.
Once I deleted everything, I could put the code back and everything worked again.
Scared me though. First time I was ever scared using Wordpress and the standard components.

In my freelance work, I haven't found a better tool that fits the bill as WordPress for blogging. Other solutions are either cumbersome to install or maintain, or are dependent on the goodwill of a company, especially if it's free.
My clients don't want to learn the static site paradigm, upload over FTP etc, so I can't really offer this option.
I understand that the new WordPress is quite different from the old paradigm. It's a big step, but I find it worth it.
