I technically have until October (thanks, microsnot!) to replace windows on my coworker's machine, so I might wait and see how Debian 13 shapes up. I'm sure it'll be mostly perfect.

I guess I need to come up with a list of pros and cons for staying with Debian. For me, the software starts getting really outdated after a release is a year old. I do wish they'd switch to a yearly release (that'd be perfect, honestly), but I do understand that it's a proper, true community-run effort, and that would about double the workload.

I've had very few problems with it in a few weeks of use, granted the hardware has been out 6 years or so, but I expected things to be worse.

I imagine most of the support is in mainline now, but with #Armbian I can run 6.12 while many of the vendor images are still stuck on 4.x!

smallsolar
Update: spent a bit of time learning about u-boot. I've flashed #armbian community amlogic S9xx Debian server to the SD card. Then was able to chain load the u-boot image and it booted up!

So I interrupted the boot loop by hitting Enter over uart, then I did `mmc info` and then `fatload mmc 1:0 0x01000000 u-boot-s905x-s912.bin` and finally `go 0x01000000`

Next is to see if can script this so I don't have to do it manually...
#hackingTvBox

selfhosting.couchsurfing
I gotta say, apart from the broken stuff when venturing off the garden path with Armbian install/config scripts, I'm very impressed with the distro after installing it and spending a couple weeks pushing the NanoPi M4 to its limit.

it doesn't support LXQt as a desktop out of the box - meaning installing #LXQt isn't a curated option in the #Armbian install script - but just adding it as one would typically do on a bare Debian machine works fine, there are few to no obvious bugs, and the desktop is very snappy on the #Rockchip RK3399.

I will try to get a #NanoPi M6 eventually, as 4 GiB RAM is just not enough, but for now the M4 is doing very well in the role I have it in.

smallsolar
After loads of research I found reference to if you erase the emmc then it should drop down to try and boot from SD or USB, using `store init 2` I managed to erase the emmc and then through a weird combination of the usb stick and SD card managed to chain load newer u-boot and voila #armbian booted!

It seems like you need both to actually boot, tried to only do one and it didn't work.

7/n
