Day 24
"The Lights on the Hill"
pastel on UART paper - 24x18 in

The last day of ArtAdventCalendar is reserved for one of my favorite works I painted this year. This will be a spotlight piece for my upcoming show "High Desert Colors" January 11 - February 23 in Northwest Reno Library, Reno NV. If you are local, I'd love you to come!
Thank you so much for following along this month, and your kind comments and boosts. I ❤️ you!

Day 21
"July 13th"
pastel on Canson Touch paper - 20x8 in

Updated a plein air painting I did on July 13th, 2022 at Davis Creek pond in Washoe City, NV. Beautiful day, even though I had to fight the sun. I put it away when I came home, then two years later I finished it by adding lights.
In September, there was a wildfire that started in Davis Creek that spread quickly. I'm pretty sure that these trees I painted are now gone.

Day 19
"Sky Day 2"
Pastel on Canson Touch paper - 7x20 in

1st of two plein air paintings I did back in 2022 at Air Sailing Gliderport in Reno, NV. Did very little in studio to finish it. I really love this wide angle format, despite the negative critique from my mentor; he thinks that it loses the focus, and I agree on that point. But the 360 deg mountains cannot be contained in 9x12!

Day 18
"Early Morning, Runway Prepared"
pastel on Canson Touch paper - 10x20 in

I was painting the mountain at Air Sailing Gliderport, Reno NV. Then the groundskeeper drove along the dirt runway with her tractor to get ready for the day. A few weeks later my husband showed her the painting on the phone, and she was delighted; "Oh that's me!"

Day 17
"High Desert Winter"
pastel on homemade surface - 7x5 in

This was when I decided that I liked winter here in high desert, and that I like this surface I created with gesso and ink. The randomness and the roughness of the texture works against the desire to be too detailed and stay more impressionistic.
Art is a never-ending learning process.
