Eva Czislowski, a student and activist, says Carnaby’s black cockatoos used to blacken the sky. ‘I can't believe that I won't be able to experience that,' she says. The endemic WA bird is just one of 2,000 Australian species listed as under threat, in what scientists are calling an extinction crisis
From blackening skies to barely casting a shadow – the Carnaby’s cockatoo faces a bleak future

It's common knowledge that we have known about the greenhouse effect since the late 19th century. Having started Andrea Wulf's "The Invention of Nature" about Alexander von Humboldt, its interesting to read that he observed human activity changing climate as well as destroying ecosystems and tried to warn of the risk at the very beginning of that century.

Good thing we paid attention and rapidly learned not to trash the planet, eh?

Continuing the trajectory towards extinction...

"Greenpeace chief executive David Ritter said Australia was a global deforestation and extinction hot spot. The declaration of a Great Koala National Park that addresses our deforestation and extinction crises is long overdue."

The geo-political craziness is damaging in more ways than just the obvious horrors (Gaza/West Bank, Ukraine, the current US administration contributing to those and more, the failure of moderates everywhere to address real and perceived problems {I suspect perceived problems are a larger motivator for extreme right or left parties than real problems}.

We're at the point where we have limited time to address the major ecosystem crises - climate, biodiversity, land use change, etc. But the focus on the political absurdities means that we are mostly unaware of the complexity and threats of the ecosystem crisis.
