I was doing a bike ride with some friends from Buck's Landing, near China Camp, and Rob Jackson was telling me about the bricks in the ground.

He said that the bricks were discards that were not good enough to sell, that the whole area is full of them, several levels deep. He said they were made around the corner in a "slug pond," and then loaded on boats and fired 'around the way at McNear's.' I didn't know about that, so I did some research.

When the gringo lawyers and squatters took the land from the Californios after 1848, all the legal maneuvering dealt with original Spanish land grant documents, so everything was in varas.

For years Yerba Buena continued to remain a village, attracting little attention. Yet it grew gradually, and in 1846 its population numbered 200 souls. On April 1, 1847, it contained 79 buildings, that is, 22 shanties, 31 frame houses and 26 adobe dwellings. In the course of five months 78 new tenements were erected, and the population was increased to 500. On January 30, 1847, the name of Yerba Buena was changed to San Francisco in an ordinance published in the California Star by Washington Bartlett. On March 10, 1847, the new city was surveyed by Jasper O'Farrell. It fronted the cove, and included the Telegraph Hill and the Rincon, extending about three fourths of a mile from north to south, and two miles from east to west, the whole embracing about one and one-half square miles. The town was laid off into lots of fifty varas, or yards, square; six of them making a building block, bounded on four sides by streets. In August, 1847, 700 had been surveyed and nearly 450 were sold at a cost of less than $16 apiece. This marked the first speculation in real estate in San Francisco; the bargains were many but the buyers few. But then the discovery of gold was yet to come in order to revolutionize the existing state of things in the young and peaceful San Francisco of forty-seven years ago.
