If the insurance run around weren't bad enough, I just found out that if the guys insurance pays out a settlement beyond basic medical costs due to owing child-support I would never see any settlement cash.

Unclear what happens to the value of the vehicle, but thankfully the car was still in a family friends name and hadn't been transfer to my partner and I yet. So hopefully I don't need to get a family lawyer for that part.

If you’ve been hurt in a car wreck, you may be entitled to pursue a personal injury claim. But, it’s important to understand that health insurance liens and subrogation claims, rights of repayment, and healthcare provider liens can all take a bite out of your case. Then there’s another matter to consider: child support liens. If you owe child support and are behind on your payments, a personal injury claim can be a good chance to catch up those payments. All states have the ability to assert a lien against your personal injury claim if you also owe back payments for child support. While your medical provider and health insurance liens are paid back first, child support liens come out of your own share of the settlement or jury verdict. Some states are willing to negotiate their liens, and others are not. It’s critical to have a lawyer advise you on this issue. Many states will hold you in contempt if you settle a personal injury claim and don’t pay back what you owe for child support from your settlement. Most liability insurance carriers will run a background check to determine whether you have a child support obligation, and may not agree to release any funds directly to you until the child support lien is resolved. There are a lot of pitfalls when it comes to liens in general, and child support liens are no exception.

The liability could be more significant than the largest automotive recall in terms of cost.

A few years ago I taught a friend’s kid how to drive a manual transmission. Had a WRX and a 92 Miata at the time so he got to drive both of them.
Today I got a text from him letting me know he’s buying his first car with a manual. It’s an Impreza.

UNDER A LUCKY STAR
Some people are born under a lucky star. The express which left #Invercargill at 6.10 a.m. on Tuesday had a large complement of passengers, and the abrupt pulling up of the train at Mill road crossing, a short distance out of Invercargill, caused some consternation, states the “Otago Daily Times.” Windows were thrown up, and the passengers noticed in the dusk a bulky shape alongside the engine. A crowd soon gathered, and was much astonished to see a man arise from a motor-car and step on to the railway track, unhurt. Inquiries elicited the information that he had pulled up across the track earlier in the morning, and had gone to sleep. The impact of the train against his car made him realise that his place of rest was scarcely the most suitable. As the engine was jammed into the body of the motor-car, with the cow-catcher resting on the running board, it was found necessary to back the train. The car, which had been carried about 25 yards along the track, was then pushed to safety by a number of the passengers, and seemed little the worse for the collision. The train was able to proceed on its way after a delay of about 15 minutes
