Trump is just a proxy. The billionaires behind Trump's corrupt GOP paid for these policies.
This is what Koch's #CitizensUnited has wrought.
Promises of tariff relief or exemptions will be used to pressure money out of the donors.

The pressure campaigns work both ways.

@tofugolem Yes, but that's not the fault of the seniors and low-income folks. That's the fault of #capitalism and for-profit utilities! (And #CitizensUnited).
#PeopleNotCorporates #PeopleOverProfit
Just 100 extremely wealthy families invested
2.6 Billion dollars during the election cycle that put Trump back in the White House and seated Republican majorities in both the House and Senate
That was more than double what billionaire donors contributed just four years prior.
The steep upward spending trend and the eye-popping amounts speak to the shifts in political power granted to the affluent and corporations in the wake of #CitizensUnited v FEC,
the supreme court’s 2010 decision that enabled
unlimited
campaign
donations.
There are limits on direct donations to political candidates, political action committees and political parties
-- but the creation of #SuperPacs in the aftermath of that decision have opened opportunities for the surge in spending.
In the 14 years since the Citizens United ruling, billionaires have poured 160 times more funds into campaigns.
The money-for-power exchange that was always hidden in the back rooms of American politics
has burst into the open in the second Trump administration
Elon Musk and some of the world’s wealthiest families spent record amounts
to secure trillions in tax breaks and deregulation,
using cuts to vital services like healthcare, education, and nutritional support to pay for it.

#ElonMusk #Wisconsin #VoterID requirement ballot “was the most important thing"
It literally was already required... incapable of admitting...losing
Well, #Musk is right, the ballot (#gerrymandering #MailinVoting #citizensunited) is the whole thing, because the #MAGA #Republicans have no norms, rules or laws to control them.

It also taught fascists the need for methods to evade financial sanctions & avoid transparency.

Hence #CitizensUnited, super PAC's for dark money in elections & foreign election interference, crypto, GiveSendGo, & PayPal.
Fascism needs bank secrecy, anonymous dark money, & automated payments to skirt sanctions
@randahl The problem goes back long before #citizensunited when #protestant churches moved into the #confederacy during the #reconstruction. These churches are so corrupt and enable so much iniquity it is unbelievable. I'm not saying they're fundamentally corrupt but they're corrupt in every other way. Their membership lists go straight to the #RNC, the #NRA, and the #HeritageFoundation.
"The last two months have proven him disastrously incorrect. #ElonMusk, a South African [immigrant]... spent $288 million to reelect #DonaldTrump last year. In return for his contributions, he has been given more #power over the federal #government than any other private individual since the founding...
The entire federal government now seems to bend to one man’s personal interests."

Elon Musk Is Demolishing the Rationale for Citizens United
The #SupremeCourt said in 2010 that the decision wouldn’t damage Americans’ faith in #democracy. Whoops.

"in #CitizensUnited v. Federal Elections Commission, in which the court struck down key guardrails against corporate spending in #American elections, Kennedy rejected the allegation that the court’s ruling would have deleterious effects on how #Americans perceived their republic."

I'm old enough to remember when Sen John McCain co-sponsored campaign finance legislation with Dem. Sen Diane Feinstein - bipartisan support in those days. Obviously, we need to do better - pass campaign finance reform & SCt ethics/recusal requirements (Thomas s/h recused from #CitizensUnited). 2/2
3/ Here's one of the song parodies I wrote..12 years ago.
2 contributors sang the words. #CitizensUnited
The money motive, together with a decision not to regulate how corporations spend their money, has broken our society.
Without regulation of how corporations may use money, its use as a means of keeping accounts, eventually kills the host.
The heartless society has sold its soul for money. Musk is an illustration of what happens when money floods politics.
It is completely unnecessary. There is a counter argument to the idea that corporations should be considered to be persons under the law. It can be argued that corporations should be considered to be corporations, and to let persons remain persons as the self-evident truths have recognized our equality to each other, but not to corporations.
If the fact that real persons do not require charters in order to exist does not distinguish us from corporations, then what?
Here is a counter argument to the majority decision in the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Citizens United in 2010.

@TechBean I assume you are reffing to his getting #citizensunited into law, and if so, he bears a ton of responsibility. However there is enough blame to share some other places as well, like the role of racism and the backlash against Obama, and the thin slicing and targeted advertising from social media, and Rupert Murdoch buying a media company to manipulate the masses …
Brought to you by Citizens United vs. #FEC (2010). Citizens United: when you absolutely, positively have to destroy #democracy overnight. Built right here in #Amerika by the Supreme Court of the United States.

Musk is a walking posterboy for overturning #CitizensUnited decision
by Sabrina Haake

"CU, in short, allowed Musk to purchase his co-presidency. Musk is now gutting agencies that previously regulated his corporate conduct; soon there will be no gov't agency left to regulate pollution by Space X, or to audit Starlink in Ukraine, or to check Musk’s plans to expand X into an “everything app” for banking and financial services."
