Hello fediverse solarpunks! We’re Solarpunk Presents Podcast, a podcast run on a shoestring budget by two lady solarpunks, one in Canada (@arielkroon) and one in Germany (@xtinadr@wandering.shop). We’re not great with technology, but we happen to both be PhDs from the opposite sides of the spectrum between STEM and Humanities/the Arts, and we’re united in our working towards solarpunk futures.

Our podcast is an interview-style podcast where we talk to guests and each other about various aspects of solarpunk, renewable energies, political action, and more. Often, our guests are people who wouldn’t label themselves as solarpunks, but are (and have been, often for years) quietly involved in working towards making the world a better place to live in. We strongly believe that once you get past the aesthetic and hype about renewables, solarpunk at its core promotes compassion, kinship with non-humans and humans alike, and grace for our fellow human beings as we all work together to survive on our shared planet.

You can support the podcast on Patreon, with tiers starting at just $1 USD! We host a monthly solarpunk hangout that all of our patrons are invited to, and all Patrons at the $3 tier and up receive early access to our episodes. There are more tiers with more extras, so head to patreon.com/solarpunkpresents to see them all. We also take one-time or recurring donations over at our PayPal: paypal.com/donate/?hosted_butt
Even if you’re not in the financial position to donate, we really value other forms of support, such as positive reviews on your podcatcher of choice (it helps us be more visible and reach more solarpunks!), or subscriptions to our YouTube channel and comments there. As writers, we thrive on feedback, and we are continually trying to make the podcast better and want to know what you think.

As I’ve said before, it's rough out there for anyone valuing the environment, social justice, compassion, and more, and we want to keep doing our part to keep hope alive. We want to broaden the imagination of what it's possible to do to contribute to a better world, no matter who you are, where you live, or what life stage you're at.

Clean energy progress in red, swing states

2024 was another record-setting year for new #storage (battery) installation, incl in TX, CA, also NM, OR, and Arizona.

Plus more residential storage.

Storage evens out grid energy supply, imp for #wind and #solar. Lets us build for avg demand, not peak demand.

More 2025 growth expected, altho' less.
Need remains, even if Biden IRA dismantled

New green battery tech - from red state Alabama

Doesn't require cooling, a big downside of lithium ion batteries.
Also cheaper to produce.

From inventor of Super Soaker.
He's also Tuskegee Institute engineer involved with stealth bomber, bunch of other stuff.

Cannot make this stuff up!

Charge your EV in 5 minutes?

China says it's developed that tech, building 4k charging stations with it.
Pretty impressive proof of concept, if it happens.

Article 👇 is skeptical, but-

If true, would be revolutionary. 💡
Allows us to swap charging for gas station stops - same behavior.
Lower barrier to adoption.

Red states moving on #cleanenergy

#Florida added more #solar in 2024 than any other state - except Texas.

FL also added more rooftop residential solar than any other state but CA.
True for last 5 years.

Industry expects FL will stay #2 in solar for both in 2025 installations.

FL law forbids "climate change" in state policies - but #extremeweather is pounding state, so people want resilient power anyway.

Backhanded #climateaction?

Abundant schadenfreude, and this:
🍊 : "wouldn't mind" oil falling to $50/barrel.

That's 25% lower than current price.

Oil exec: below $60/barrel = less drilling, esp by "unconventional shale and the smaller players"
because they will make no profit on it.

Lower oil prices, less drilling.

Keep it in the ground!

Saving $$ with #cleanenergy

NY needs to replace a lot of #fossilgas lines b/c of age and wear.
Very expensive to do, raises gas bills.

May be cheaper to electrify neighborhoods, even including:
- all new heating and cooling
- weatherization of bldgs

Plus: no gas leaks & better air quality & health 🙌

Pressure to pass state law to facilitate this #electrification

Great news from expert outlook for clean energy this year- really!

93% of new power plants will be renewables: solar, battery storage, wind

Total electricity produced by fossil gas will *fall*. Gas is the main fossil fuel producing electricity in US now (not coal)

Multi year trend accelerating, Biden-era investments and legislation paying off

Nobody tell 🍊, ok?

Canary Media · Chart: Solar, batteries to lead US power plant construction in 2025The country is set to build a record 63 gigawatts of new power this year as demand surges — and almost all of it will be carbon-free.

Industry experts predict residential #solar to surge in US this year, compared to 2024.

They see more demand for power, better interest rates (?), more EV charging, and more energy storage as more influential than 🍊 love of fossil fuels.

And: they allege political uncertainty of 2024 depressed sales 😒

Final tally on #cleanenergy win:

Americans bought 32% more clean air-source heat pumps than fossil gas furnaces in 2024.

Biggest margin ever!

20 year trend, aka much bigger than 🍊

Got big bump from Biden's #IRA tax credits, also normal trend of how new tech is adopted.
