Dutch ministers ramp up controls on weapons exports to Israel.

The Dutch government will now assess exports of military equipment and dual-use goods to Israel on a case-by-case basis, following the collapse of a ceasefire in the Middle East.

“This is desirable given the security situation in Israel, the Palestinian Territories and the broader region,” said the trade and foreign ministers.

Northern Ireland could benefit from Trump’s madness. It probably won’t.

The province’s politics, already delicate after Brexit, are about to become more so.

Northern Ireland exists as a sort of economic hybrid, in which the internal markets of Britain and the EU overlap. In theory, the tariffs have an upside for the region. Yet, even in Northern Ireland, businesspeople are worried.

"Retaliation by other countries will lead to a fall in US exports. In the 1930s, after the Smoot-Hawley tariffs were imposed, retaliation led to a 33% fall in US exports and spiralling down of international trade […].
"A tariff trade war would hit the US economy harder than Smoot-Hawley, since trade is now three times as big a share of GDP as it was in 1929, and was 75% of GDP in 2024 – versus roughly 6% in 1929."

70% of EU exports to be impacted by tariffs.

EU officials have said some €380 billion worth of EU exports will be hit by US President Donald Trump's array of tariffs, amounting to some 70% of all EU exports to the US.

The bloc will imminently retaliate against Trump's 25% tariffs on steel and aluminium, but will take time to analyse the impact of last night’s range of reciprocal tariffs before deciding on further countermeasures.
