Gladwyn d’Souza<p>Submitted as a state density bonus project, developers are waiving height and density limits as they are outlined in the city’s Downtown Precise Plan — which limits heights to eight stories or 92 feet. The state density bonus allows for mixed-use housing projects that include senior housing developments flexibility from development standards to streamline the production of needed housing. </p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/HousePeopleNotCars" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>HousePeopleNotCars</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/HomelessnessIsAtTheIntersectionOfWarMisogynyPovertyMilitarismRacismAndCorporateTheocracy" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>HomelessnessIsAtTheIntersectionOfWarMisogynyPovertyMilitarismRacismAndCorporateTheocracy</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://www.smdailyjournal.com/news/local/developer-sees-housing-towers-as-way-to-help-seniors/article_ddc22cb2-6e8a-11ef-848f-93a202389219.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">smdailyjournal.com/news/local/</span><span class="invisible">developer-sees-housing-towers-as-way-to-help-seniors/article_ddc22cb2-6e8a-11ef-848f-93a202389219.html</span></a></p>
Gladwyn d’Souza<p>Building <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/housing" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>housing</span></a> on city-owned parking plazas is one of the strategies for meeting state housing goals that was laid out in the city’s 2023-31 housing element. This plan is a roadmap for how the city will meet state housing quotas. Menlo Park is required to build 2,946 units of housing, 740 of which have to be affordable to very low-income residents, by 2031. <br />Menlo Park projects that the city-owned parking lots will provide at least 345 units that are affordable to households at the very low-income level.<br /><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/HousePeopleNotCars" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>HousePeopleNotCars</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/HomelessnessIsAtTheIntersectionOfWarMisogynyPovertyMilitarismRacismAndCorporateTheocracy" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>HomelessnessIsAtTheIntersectionOfWarMisogynyPovertyMilitarismRacismAndCorporateTheocracy</span></a> <br /><a href="https://www.almanacnews.com/housing/2024/08/28/menlo-park-plans-to-construct-low-income-housing-on-city-owned-parking-lots-downtown/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">almanacnews.com/housing/2024/0</span><span class="invisible">8/28/menlo-park-plans-to-construct-low-income-housing-on-city-owned-parking-lots-downtown/</span></a></p>

Gladwyn d’Souza<p>“There is no basis for the $60,000 per day claim,” Thomas Mumley,  assistant executive officer at San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board, told San José Spotlight. “A monetary penalty is not mandatory, it’s imposed at the discretion of a water board, and we typically do not pursue monetary penalties for local agencies unless a violation is egregious.”</p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/HomelessnessIsAtTheIntersectionOfWarMisogynyPovertyMilitarismRacismAndCorporateTheocracy" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>HomelessnessIsAtTheIntersectionOfWarMisogynyPovertyMilitarismRacismAndCorporateTheocracy</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://sanjosespotlight.com/absolutely-stunned-san-jose-mayor-matt-mahan-inflates-costs-of-homeless-sweeps/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">sanjosespotlight.com/absolutel</span><span class="invisible">y-stunned-san-jose-mayor-matt-mahan-inflates-costs-of-homeless-sweeps/</span></a></p>

Gladwyn d’Souza<p>Multiple articles in response to the immolation try to paint the deputies as compassionate, highlight how there was an Uber outside waiting to take the Gouldings to their temporary housing, and evade the foundational violence of this event. Taking away an elderly person’s home is immensely violent. A system that makes housing a for-profit enterprise where this fundamental necessity of life can be taken away at a moment’s notice is a violent system. </p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/HomelessnessIsAtTheIntersectionOfWarMisogynyPovertyMilitarismRacismAndCorporateTheocracy" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>HomelessnessIsAtTheIntersectionOfWarMisogynyPovertyMilitarismRacismAndCorporateTheocracy</span></a></p><p><a href="https://open.substack.com/pub/newmeans/p/who-decides-what-violence-is?r=39z3o&amp;utm_medium=ios" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">open.substack.com/pub/newmeans</span><span class="invisible">/p/who-decides-what-violence-is?r=39z3o&amp;utm_medium=ios</span></a></p>
