Cellarmaster Mike and Markus are very happy to put the wrap on another successful harvest.
Plus, check out this fresh update on "The Best Wineries (and More) to Visit in Lodi Right Now":
Another very nice write-up from Randy Caparoso. This time he focused on Monday's pick of Steve Borra's Church Block planted in 1935.

Typical vineyard "conference table": the white pickup truck tailgate. Markus and Mike go over plans for the day at Berghold Vineyards in Lodi.

Loading cartons of fresh grapes into a truck is like working a puzzle for Markus. These Berghold Vineyards Lodi Zinfandel are heading to a Pennsylvania winery with stops at other wineries along the way. Cartons for the first stop are at the rear. Last stop goes into the truck first.

Berghold Vineyards Lodi Zinfandel looking good on this thankfully cool morning. We're thinking harvest will again be complete here before October. That used to be quite rare. No longer.
Our morning pick of Berghold Vineyards Syrah looking very good. We've got a solid hardworking crew this year. Here they fill thick cardboard shipping boxes right in the vineyard used to ship to wineries throughout the country. In this case our client requested whole clusters. We also crush or press. The boxes are lined with a thick plastic bag then sealed. A lid is strapped on then it's into our chiller to get ready for a refrigerated truck. The white plastic tube is used to keep space open in the center for dry ice to jump start the cooling.
Another incredibly beautiful morning to bring in Lodi grapes! Today our Markus crew starts with Berghold Syrah.
Happy Grower + Happy Winemaker = Happy Customer
Our first pick of 2024 reds this morning at Nicolini Ranch with Al Nicolini pulling in Ancient Vine Lodi Carignane. We help manage our source vineyards and even pick into a hundred tiny bins when it helps our wonderful winery clients.
A beautiful Lodi morning, perfect to start bringing in reds for the 2024 vintage. Nicolini Ranch Ancient Vine Carignane.
Not quite there yet. At least another week or so before we pick these big dark Petite Sirah clusters from Corey's Block in Lodi. They are currently at 21.1 Brix 3.43 pH. We are liking these daily high temps that are dipping into the upper 70's. We may bring in our first reds this Friday. For whites, all but Viognier is in and pressed.
Sampling. Sampling. Sampling!
Markus heads into the Corey's Block Petite Sirah in Lodi. This is a new source for us that already has intense flavor. From tasting, Markus guesses it's at 22 Brix right now. He'll hand crush the clusters and test them back in our winery lab in Victor.
This morning’s sampling of Ancient Vine Carignane from Lodi’s Nicolini Ranch for sugar and acid (Brix/pH). Flavors are just emerging, and we’d guess these are around 20.5 Brix. Still need some more hangtime.
