Disastrous storms swept across the Midwest this past week, bringing heavy rainfall ranging from 2 to 18+ inches that reduced the extent and intensity of drought. The highest rainfall totals were recorded in western Kentucky. The storms caused power outages, damaging winds and tornadoes. At least 24 people have died since last week as a result of this severe weather outbreak.

USDM Hot Topic April 10, 2025: the Midwest. Drought eased in the Midwest following a severe storm event, with two-category improvements in areas. Over the past week, abnormal dryness or drought decreased from 62.72% to 42.82%. Moderate drought or worse receded from 27.84% to 14.85%. Severe drought also decreased slightly, from 2.57% to 1.07%.
