CARDI FRITTI della NONNA
(“”)
Our New Year’s Eve meal are these fried cardoons in batter, which was my paternal grandmother’s holiday tradition, and she was actually born on this day (since deceased, passed on May Day, years ago). My grandmother was pure Piedmontese, the region to the far north bordering Switzerland.
On the side, I also served coppa and prosciutto, which is a nod to my paternal grandfather, who was in the meat in salumi business with my grandmother working with him, plus my dad. There are also green and black olives, plus grapes.
We also enjoyed a classic Negroni cocktail with equal parts gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari.
