Get Crazy is a somewhat obscure 80s comedy that really shouldn't be that obscure. It's got an amazing cast and an interesting backstory to it. What's more, it's got two great performances from Lou Reed and Malcolm McDowell.

"Happy New Year’s Eve! It’s already 2023 in the Republic of Kiribati, which is one of the first places on Earth to celebrate the new year. The thirty-two atolls that make up the country are stretched between the Coordinated Universal Time +12, +13, and +14 time zones. In 1939, the S.S. North Haven, operated by Pan American Airways, arrived on Canton Island, part of the Republic of Kiribati, to construct an airbase for Pan American, and by 1940, it was ready for operation. Pan American used Canton Island as a stop on its routes from California to Fiji and Auckland, New Zealand. Do you have anything fun planned this evening to ring in the new year?" People at work New Year's Day. Sometimes, you can tell who partied too hard on New Year's Eve without asking. My butterscotch kitty Shylo sure looks tired in my chair as she tries to get her daily 23 hours of sleep... 🐈 😻

CARDI FRITTI della NONNA
(“”)
Our New Year’s Eve meal are these fried cardoons in batter, which was my paternal grandmother’s holiday tradition, and she was actually born on this day (since deceased, passed on May Day, years ago). My grandmother was pure Piedmontese, the region to the far north bordering Switzerland.

On the side, I also served coppa and prosciutto, which is a nod to my paternal grandfather, who was in the meat in salumi business with my grandmother working with him, plus my dad. There are also green and black olives, plus grapes.

We also enjoyed a classic Negroni cocktail with equal parts gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari.

This , we're enjoying “Piper Chen Sings” by award-winning Broadway actor Phillipa Soo and Maris Pasquale Doran, with illustrations by Qin Leng.

An empowering story about a girl who turns her performance jitters into confidence when faced with singing a solo at her school concert. Piper Chen inspires children to greet the butterflies and enjoy their moment to shine bright.

Monterey-Salinas Transit / MST is operating a Saturday schedule on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2024. Note that there are NO LATE NIGHT BUS ROUTES THIS YEAR, except to Del Monte Center, as indicated on the First Night Monterey website. firstnightmonterey.org/FNM/Par

Alas, we’re not attending , just biked to town for an errand at Del Monte Center today, where we shot these photos.

Jealous of people who say they can be asleep by 9 pm or 10 pm. Here there will almost certainly be some folks setting off illegal fireworks at midnight, scaring both me and Tennessee. At least we've had enough rain that the fire danger shouldn't be all that high.

First Night Monterey "does not provide valet parking. The FNM footprint is closed to all vehicular traffic, including bicycles (except when walked) and dogs. If you choose to ride your bicycle, there is bicycle parking near the shuttle bus stop at Del Monte Center. There are also bicycle racks located throughout downtown Monterey along Alvarado Street - and including larger racks at the Sports Center…” [remainder of FNM web page info about bike parking isn’t entirely accurate].

"Please be courteous and walk your bike within the FNM footprint. Bicycles are not permitted inside any venue.”
