Hey smart people of the Internet. It seems like things have changed (for the worse) in newer #Python. I am trying to install #wxPython like I always have been doing, per wxpython.org/pages/downloads/

pip install -U -f extras.wxpython.org/wxPython4/ wxPython

And it is suddenly yelling at me to not install the exact way I have been installing this for years and years. What is the new cool hip way they want me to do this? Preferably uncomplicated. #ubuntu #gnu #linux #programming

wxPython · wxPython DownloadsCurrent Release Starting with wxPython 4.0 (the first Phoenix release) the wxPython source archive and, for supported platforms, wxPython binary wheels are available from the Python Package Index (PyP

Ah, yes. I had forgotten that this #Ubuntu computer would refuse to play sound out of anything but the internal speakers when connected to an external monitor. Lovely.

It makes me want to strangle anyone who says that #linux doesn't have audio issues anymore.

So apparently, #Ubuntu 24.04 no longer supports installing to an encrypted disk. It's just not an option in the installer. You have to install an earlier version and upgrade, or do some convoluted remount dance to sneak it in.

This is Ubuntu LTS. How can they claim it's business-ready and secure when they *remove* basic security configuration?

Apparently it's something to do with the new installer framework, but I don't care. This is embarrassing.

I would like to follow the suggestion of a great many Moastodonians, and roll my laptop over to #linux (probably #Ubuntu, since I'm a novice, and that seems to be the go-to for beginners.)

I haven't made the jump, and I'm not certain I can.

I have a Chromebook, which I mostly like, and a little Win11 laptop, which just looks after my NAS, and does literally nothing else.

My NAS needs a windows machine to interface (I've never wanted to deal with Apple, which my NAS can use.)

So yes, Linux, but I've nowhere to put it, and I'm a slow learner, with not much spare time.

It feels SO GOOD having started this complete "#backup mega action" plan:

1 buying 2 1TB HDs DONE
2 dumping all data of veryOldLaptop DONE
3 dumping all data of OldLaptop IN PROGRESS
4 dumping big data of #Fairphone IN PROG
5 backuping google [everything], spotify IN PROG
6 compare + choose backup program[s] TBD
7 setting up regular backup cycles TBD
8 being happy TBD

Not included are steps like "install #ubuntu on OldLaptop", "#ungoogle Fairphone" etc. but OK.

I'm on my way, finally! \o/
