I'm only part-way thru it, just beginning Book Two this morn. My early pleasure at FSF's clever language has been marred many times by my shock at his overtly misogynistic prolly, sexist defo, tones. Women are constantly "stupid", "dull", "fat", "breeders", otherwise objects of lust & for conquest, but never as respectful equals. There's been many earlier times i was tempted to toot quotes illustrating my preceding critique, but this morning i found a new low.<blockquote>The man had had the hardest blow of his life. He knew at last what he wanted, but in finding it out it seemed that he had put it forever beyond his grasp. He reached home in misery, dropped into an armchair without even removing his overcoat, and sat there for over an hour, his mind racing the paths of fruitless and wretched self-absorption. She had sent him away! That was the reiterated burden of his despair. Instead of seizing the girl and holding her by sheer strength until she became passive to his desire, instead of beating down her will by the force of his own, he had walked, defeated and powerless, from her door, with the corners of his mouth drooping and what force there might have been in his grief and rage hidden behind the manner of a whipped schoolboy. At one minute she had liked him tremendously—ah, she had nearly loved him. In the next he had become a thing of indifference to her, an insolent and efficiently humiliated man.He had no great self-reproach—some, of course, but there were other things dominant in him now, far more urgent. He was not so much in love with Gloria as mad for her. Unless he could have her near him again, kiss her, hold her close and acquiescent, he wanted nothing more from life. By her three minutes of utter unwavering indifference the girl had lifted herself from a high but somehow casual position in his mind, to be instead his complete preoccupation. However much his wild thoughts varied between a passionate desire for her kisses and an equally passionate craving to hurt and mar her, the residue of his mind craved in finer fashion to possess the triumphant soul that had shone through those three minutes. She was beautiful—but especially she was without mercy. He must own that strength that could send him away.</blockquote>This was written in 1922. Today we have epidemics of entitled dickswingers believing women are their property do do with as they wish, including rape, beat, murder. It seems that popular culture has been normalising this for far longer than i'd realised. Repugnant. Now wondering if i should finish this book, & indeed whether to read the other FSF's on my tablet. That must change.As Whitlam knew, driving real change - transformative social and cultural change, that attempts to take the nation with you - takes moral leadership. And political capital.International Women's Day has a way of focusing our attention. For the past decade it has become performative, overtaken by purple ribbons and cupcakes. While we sit on our hands.This year, listening to the Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese's dreary words about "marching forward", reflecting on how far "Australia has come" and "the foundations we've laid", was like floating mindlessly inside the bubble of a parallel universe, disconnected to the real world that real women live in.Albanese's IWD speech at the annual parliamentary breakfast, hosted by UN Women, did nothing to acknowledge, much less address, the almighty anti-woman sentiment and backlash whipping women around the globe right now. Including we meek sods sitting in front of him.According to UN Women, one in four nations report backlash on women's rights. They report "higher levels of discrimination and weaker legal protections" across the world.Fascist plutocracies are literally ripping up reproductive rights - exciting conservative men in places such as Queensland and South Australia, who sniff the changing winds of patriarchal power.Others, such as misogynistic theocracies in Iran and Afghanistan, are playing the God card to justify dehumanising women and banning basic human rights and freedom of movement.In Australia women's freedom of movement, voice and expression have all taken a serious hit, now that "radical anti-feminism" is an official thing. Research from Melbourne University shocked but confirmed what women can see for themselves - female hatred is coming out of the closet. The data found "20 per cent of Australian men believe that feminism should be violently resisted."We know that men "frustrated out of their brain" because they can't "get a girlfriend", can hunt down women in a Bondi shopping mall stabbing spree, and yet still authorities don't call it "terrorism", because it wasn't "ideologically" motivated."Radical anti-feminism", as detailed by the Melbourne researchers, sounds like a dangerous ideology to me.Albanese says we need to be "clear about where we still have a long way to go."Well, two out of every five Australians are already clear. They think "women's equal rights have gone far enough", according to research out this week from the Global Institute of Women's Leadership. Women whose stated goal was not "equality", but "liberation!"When Whitlam's Women's adviser, Elizabeth Reid, walked on stage at the inaugural UN World Conference on Women, in Mexico City, 1975, to mark International Women's Year, she had steel in her spine. Over 6000 women activists, 1300 government delegates from 133 nations, and 1000 media representatives had arrived. The UN called it the "greatest consciousness raising event in history".The world was watching and Australia's representative was there to prize open the one subject the UN did not want on the agenda - sexism. Reid let rip."We live in societies ... ruled by men - our societies are patriarchal," she said, eyeballing world leaders."None of us live in, and it is impossible to imagine living in, a non-sexist society."The word sexism had never been used in an official UN forum before. UN member states were squirming. Reid pushed on."The basis of racism, racial discrimination, colonialism and neo-colonialism ... is similar to that violence against women which we call sexism. If limited to commentators who knew what the word actually meant, I’d be lucky to have 35¢.Woke wasn’t always a pejorative, of course.Before George Floyd’s horrific murder, it had long been in use among the African-American community – “stay woke” meant, essentially, “stay alert to systemic injustice”. The kind of systemic injustice, for example, that might lead to you gasping for air with a police officer’s knee to your throat.Following Floyd’s death, it gained global ascendancy through the Black Lives Matter movement.Since then, the meaning has shifted. Some in the cultural and political right seized on the word – much as they did “political correctness” – to use it as a catch-all for any policy or movement that did not align with their worldview.As a branding exercise, it was genius. Any time “woke” passes through sneering lips at a media conference, or appears in the op-ed pages, you know it’s some conservative – or regressive – voice intent on maintaining their privileged status in society.Political leaders such as Donald Trump and Peter Dutton call out woke like Joseph McCarthy once called out communists – it’s a vibe thing.And not a day goes by without frothing social media comments in response to even the most innocuous posts – “so sick of this woke crap!” etc etc.I imagine you’ll see it in response to this piece, too.But what, exactly, is woke these days? It seems to be any policy, activity or movement with even a hint of empathy at its core.Welcome to Country ceremonies, which can have the added benefit of reminding people of our nation’s (ahem) complicated history, have been described as “divisive and woke ceremonial practices with no meaning”.An acknowledgement of First Nations people prior to an event? That’s woke. A rainbow flag outside a business? That’s woke. Giving the disadvantaged a leg up? That’s woke.Not adequately celebrating Australia Day? That’s woke. Recognising that particular national holiday may not be a cause for celebration for all Australians? Woke.Diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) programs? Woke.To a degree, I get it. Change is hard. I’ve been known to struggle with the “they/them” pronouns – not through any issue with trans people, but rather with the words’ plural nature (just how many of them are there?).But if adjusting my language can make life a little easier for someone already having to navigate so much, I’m happy to oblige (even if I wish they – in the traditional plural sense of “they” – adopted a new word).Of late, though, the right’s mask has been coming off.Never was that more obvious than when an eminently qualified black, lesbian fire chief in Los Angeles came under attack as a “DEI hire”.
