Note that today (April 16) and tomorrow (April 17) are the 25th anniversary of the Great Siege of the IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings back on those days in 2000. There was action every day leading up to it. I was there every day.

The April 15 2000 "PIC" or Prison-Industrial Complex march was kettled, leading to the famous "Becker" settlement paid out a full decade later. That was the only kettle I was ever trapped in as it was the first one I ever saw. Upon release early AM the next morning I deployed directly to the IMF and World Bank blockades, stopping only for a snack.

The siege lines we held were bounded by 15th st on the East, 21st st on the West, E st on the South, and I st on the North. The IMF, World Bank, US Treasury, White House, Old and New Executive Office Buildings, and many more were all inside the seige lines due to the perimeter set by the cops themselves.

The only delegates to get in that first day were those who overnighted in the World Bank building's lobby as I recall. Was a beautiful spring day for protesters a street's width thick blocking access to the IMF and World Bank. A black bloc early in the morning basically kicked open the door for everything else to happen. Word was some of the cops practically crapped in their pants when they saw an armored, battle-ready black bloc for the first time.

The next morning we were down to about 5,000 people and the day started with some minor fighting and police violence. A weather front had come through, so it was now very cold and rainy yet we still had 5,000 diehards in the street.

In the end, the protesters on the 17th struck a deal with the cops to carry out a conventional CD, as they lacked the numbers to surround that huge perimeter for a second day in a row.

Our second day numbers were enough to hold the streets and win the day, but the Federal government had pre-emptively shut down all their offices on the west side of town as though for a snowstorm. This was something right-wing militias had failed to accomplish in nearly a decade of trying at that point.

The #EuropeanCommission is issuing #BurnerPhones and basic laptops to some US-bound staff to avoid the risk of #espionage, a measure traditionally reserved for trips to #China.

Commissioners and senior officials travelling to the #IMF and #WorldBank spring meetings next week have been given the new guidance, according to four people familiar with the situation.

How much will it #cost to #earthquake-proof the #world?

If you know any socialist architects, please #share.

If you've seen any good analyses already, please link.

---------

The #WorldBank claims that if #Turkey wanted to be earthquake-proof, the cost would be USD 500 billion.

Is it possible that #Erdogan (who is US-friendly) asked for a sky-high estimate, to save himself from political blame? I genuinely don't know.
