No #AprilFool junk from me today.

Instead, this month's calendar page

Kids these days will not understand that there were periods in the history of the Internet (and its precursors) where things were basically unusable on April 1st.

It got particularly bad around the late 90’s/early 2000’s tech boom, where literally everything on April 1st was…not even good…pranks. The essence of an April Fool’s Day prank is it has to be believable at first glance, and it has to be an isolated thing. If everything you say is a prank, it just gets old.

The only difference between today and any other day is that today they’ll wink at you when they lie. Regard what you see with the same level of scrutiny every other day. They’ll be lying to you tomorrow as well, just with a bit more gloss and polish. #AprilFool

“I will hold on tighter 'til the afterglow…🎶🌄”. AH COOL!! 😍. What an ‘amazing April afterglow’ before sunrise along The Old Head of Kinsale lighthouse & Courtmacsherry Bay in West Cork, Ireland!! 🥰📸🌅🌊💡🏠✨❤️ #Sunrise #sun #dawn #April #April1st #aprilfoolsday #aprilfools #aprilfool #Spring #music #lighthouse #photography #photo #photographer #art #nature #colour #colours #sea #ocean #mastodon #mastodaoine #mastoart #landscape #landscapephotography #weather #Kinsale #WestCork #Cork #Ireland

I was there the day this came out. It's an actual implementable standard, and indeed _has been implemented_ at least once.

It's also one of my favourite April Fools' jokes.

AND THERE'S A SONG ABOUT IT.

datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/ - A Standard for the Transmission of IP Datagrams on Avian Carriers

And the song, about its implementation: "Paper Pings", @ssavitzky (Steve Savitzsky), steve.savitzky.net/Songs/pigeo

IETF DatatrackerRFC 1149: Standard for the transmission of IP datagrams on avian carriersThis memo describes an experimental method for the encapsulation of IP datagrams in avian carriers. This specification is primarily useful in Metropolitan Area Networks. This is an experimental, not recommended standard.
