August 24, 1983: A 12:45 start today. I had four major mountains to climb. I would need to average two-and-a-half miles per hour, rest stops included, in order to complete this section by dark.

In the spirit of #WaterfallWednesday, I hiked to this magnificent #waterfall today in the White #Mountains, #NewHampshire. It felt impossible to fully capture the beauty of this 140 foot (43 m) waterfall in a single image. Here is a pic looking up at the upper portion with the sun setting behind the top. Enjoy! #nature #winter #hiking
The enormity of what I’m about to do feels so daunting. The anxiety of the unknown mixes with the excitement of adventure, and it’s hard not to start spiraling.
Maybe it’s biting off way more than I can chew, but I feel driven to at least take this journey as far as I can.
I hit the trailhead tomorrow.
I decided to send my hiking clothes to Insect Shield to be treated. The truth is, I couldn’t bear the thought of having to treat them myself again two or three times this year. Just got them back and so far happy. The effectiveness is supposed to last at least 70 washings. Did the bulk option and sent two pants, two shirts, three sun hoodies, and five pairs of socks. It did take 29 days from the initial order to receiving the clothes back, so plan ahead.

June 3, 1983: Of all the mountains I have seen on this hike, Hump is now my favorite.
Been filling up an old gas cannister with gas from half empty ones and making sure weight compares well with a newly bought full one. The FlipFuel really does an excellent job at recycling gas and it is easy to accomplish.
It snowed all day today while I was #hiking up to a summit in the White #Mountains, #NewHampshire. Who says it’s spring? My crampons got a workout with all of the ice under the fresh layer of powder. Didn’t see another person the entire day. So amazing having a mountain to myself! #backpacking #nature

May 13, 1983: Heading north from Springer Mountain, the tiny unincorporated community of Wesser, North Carolina is the first trail town through which the #AppalachianTrail physically passes. This corner of Wesser is a narrow strip along the floor of the deep, heavily-wooded, steep-walled gorge which the Nantahala River has gouged through the mountains.
Time for adventure! I’m headed to Astoria for the beginning of the Oregon Coast Trail.

July 3, 1983: My final twelve miles today were in Shenandoah. The trail inside the park was well-graded and almost completely cleared of overgrowth. I hiked through dignified old forests of stately trees, following the ridgeline for most of the distance. There were a number of good viewpoints.
Coming out of winter hibernation, I’ve opened the long distance hiking season with a 40km hike of my favorite section of Skåneleden trail in Sweden. The taller trees are still bare, but there were a lot of delightful spring flowers and moss on the ground!
Endless creek crossings and endless steep climbing bring my positive mood to a screeching halt during Day 2. But as ever, there are valuable lessons, and beauty all around me.

September 13, 1983: After Page Pond, the AT scaled steeply up to Wocket Ledge, where open rock faces just off the trail provided the best southward views I had yet seen in the Mahoosucs.

Spent the night on Mount Hood up at Mirror Lake. Beautiful sunset and sunrise - and great company!
Clothing for an entire month, and I feel like I'm overpacking!
