Adam Steer...the person is now actually dead. which is sad because he was an OK person.As a field team you don't need to know all the things. "BTW I might die on you" is kind of essential. And that might not stop anything. It is just showing basic respect to the team, so everyone can be prepared.As researchers we're meant to say "oh well its all good nobody died"....which is unacceptable. It is how researchers *keep dying* on fieldwork. I'd done the same thing successfully as a team of 2 on another voyage, demonstrating extreme competence in ice navigation/safety/data collection.The problem was it went against the dominant doctrine. I tried hard to get my co-worker trained in rifle handling and operate as a two person/fast light team. We were denied, and forced to take a third person as a bear guard.Turns out this person was extremely ill with terminal cancer and *nobody told us*.
