donthatedontkill<p>I swear I'll finish my little essay on Hyperion and Big Tech one of these days! I was able to carve out an hour or so of my schedule to work on it today. What's embarrassing is that it's not that long. Probably a 10 minute read, but I just want to do a good job. I keep saying I'll find more time to write but then what should I give up to find that time? ScienceActually<p>There’s a theoretical limit to how tall a tree can grow, and it’s about 426 feet (130 meters).</p><p>Why? Because trees rely on capillary action and water tension to pull water up from their roots to their leaves. At a certain height, gravity overcomes the tree’s ability to transport water effectively, causing water columns to break and leading to air bubbles (embolism) in their vascular system. Space Catitude 🚀<p>Haven't been reading as much or as often as I'd like, but I did just finish Dan Simmons' "Hyperion" (1990 Hugo winner). I've been reading it in short bits for months (perhaps over a year? Notably what happens at the end of the second book and how I see it as a metaphor to what some of us in the fediverse and indieweb are trying to do in terms of tech and healing that part of our society.
