Don't help me out of it - I'm trapped in a Japanese space monster movie poster tar pit. And now... ups... it just spilled over into your timeline...

Japanese Ceramicist Handcrafts Fanciful Sculptures of Enchanting Exotic Fruits
In Purmerend Museum from March 27
till August 17 2025
A late 80s/early 90s #Japanese #synth #electronic music sound #studio, with a Yamaha stack. A Yamaha RM602 recording mixer with optional patch bay, a Yamaha MT44D multitrack cassette recorder, mounted in special Yamaha rack, and finally, the Yamaha TG77 tone generator, a SY77 in rack mount form. It doesn't have a floppy disk drive, but takes a lot less space than the 72 key keyboard. And one more piece, the Yamaha YMC10 midi converter, allowing the multitrack to sync with midi clock. #midi

@Pokemod97 Oh! I also remembered that I wrote a big list of #Japanese resources on a friend's message board a few months ago! I need to streamline this and turn this into a blog post or something ahaha

If you don't need the gamified stuff and just want a good study tool to reinforce your #Japanese learning from other sources like textbooks, podcasts, etc, then I highly recommend Anki. I wrote a bunch of blog entries on getting started with it:
https://renkotsuban.com/tags/learning-japanese-with-anki.html
For #Japanese self-study learners who are looking for an alternative app to Duolingo, may I recommend renshuu.org? I used it for years to supplement my lessons and it was great, very active and fun community with a lot of different activities. If you're into gamified learning it has ALL the dopamine hits. I got REALLY into the shiritori games in particular:
Speaking of reading Japanese, these days I am on an UNNO Jūza kick. Unno was a writer of mysteries and science fiction active throughout the 1930s, so most of his work is in the public domain and easily found online. I have been plowing through his works for several weeks. Unless an author is intentionally trying to be obtuse, anything written from the early Show Era onward is still perfectly readable today. Unno is easy to read and also fun. Another prewar author who is easy to read is the #Yuri Queen, YOSHIYA Nobuko. #Japanese #literature #mystery #SciFi
A few years ago, on the birdsite, I said I didn’t think it was possible for someone who had never lived in Japan and could not speak #Japanese fluently to become a good translator. This was not well received. I was accused of being ableist, among other things, and in the end I backed down and apologized. And yet I remain unconvinced. I believe that to understand the nuances of language, you have to witness it firsthand, in the real world, and furthermore learn the nuances through trial and error by expressing yourself in conversation, and also in written correspondence. Something I find annoying when studying #japanese at a reasonably high level is the teacher's insistence on tossing in translations for simple words into English
First and foremost - not everyone speaks English, or uses it as their first language
But also, if I'm studying your language at a higher level than you speak mine, it's unlikely you are helping me with simple word translations
Mostly, you're just wrenching me out of my Japanese immersion each time you do it
