If the United States still exists in 2026, and if protests aren't illegal yet, I have a plan for possibly the biggest and most symbolic protest in American History. The plan is to hold a protest on 2026, July 4th, any time of the day would be fine. People can still light off fireworks (if they can even afford them) but this protest can be a massive symbolic move of American Unity. Why 2026? Because this date will mark 250 years since the United States Declaration of Independence. It is a very major number, it is a quarter of a millennium. I can't organize this protest alone. Let's get the word out, and make our voices heard!

A supplemental protest should also be held on 2025, July 4th, as that is closer, and still symbolic. How many times have been there been mass protests during the Fourth of July?

Fireworks of any kind are banned in the county where I live but every year several families still fire off a "safe & & sane" but illegal display of fireworks on my court.

It's a big multi-family affair &everyone in attendance seems to enjoy it.

I'm the only single person living on the court. So I'm the designated GOM (Grumpy Old Man) but I'm cordial enough to not "report" the event, even though I find it annoying (much like Halloween) but I'm prepared for it.

The event only lasts a couple of hours & there are only a few additional bursts of firecrackers & cherry bombs set off by others

I just stay inside the house & watch the July 4th "celebrations" & "fireworks" displays on TV which is the same thing I do on New Years Eve. However, on Halloween, I turn off all the lights are go out to see a movie.

Bah humbug! LOL! 😎

Something about the Fourth of July always has me listening to Lana del Rey. The Americana thing, I guess.

Whatever the date, I find the combo of her voice, the allusions to Southern California, the hiphop beats, the orchestral arrangements, it's all so hypnotic.

I love this stupid fucking country.

I was raised to both acknowledge our painful history (and present!) and believe in our promise, to believe that we can be better, that our founding principles provide a roadmap.

About a month ago I was at a Bay FC game and was stuck in a food line during the national anthem. Two teenage girls were near me and I was interested to see how The Youths deal with the anthem these days. They both put their hands over their hearts.
I teared up.

We can save ourselves. We must.

Last year, I wrote an essay about a different perspective on July 4th. No, not a political perspective, a personal one as somebody with sensitive ears. So for 2024, here's my PSA to be kind to those with sensitive ears during this unnecessarily loud time of year in the U.S.

A Good Reed Review · Sensitive ears? Watch out!By Ande Jacobson Two times of the year are tricky for those of us with sensitive ears, at least in the United States. July 4th and year end pose a particular conundrum. Why? Fireworks abound, and w…

I took tonight's San Jose fireworks videos from the roof of the parking structure at Berryessa/North San Jose BART station. With some fireworks still going on in the background, here's a 10-car Orange Line train arriving from Richmond.

More of my fireworks video: "There's the downtown San Jose show..." (official fireworks) "...and here's the rest of the city" (unofficial fireworks everywhere). Actually it pans across East SJ & Berryessa district, about 1/4 of the rest of the city. 🇺🇸

A little more story behind why I did a bicycle ride video for . In previous years I'd ride with San Jose Bike Party in the parade. But 2020 was all social-distancing😷 in the COVID-19 pandemic before the vaccines were ready. So I called it a "parade of one" and put it to 🇺🇸 music.
