I don't have the complete citation, but this #Sanskrit verse from the #Hindu epic #Mahabharata is timelessly relevant to all domains. First the English meaning and then the source text in different scripts.

Meaning:
A little work done with knowledge has great import.
A lot of work done with ignorance has no benefit.

E.g., a small piece of software, like a function, developed with full understanding can be very useful. OTOH, a large piece of software, like an entire service, is of no use if it's developed with no understanding of requirements or engineering principles.

State of (in)security - Week 16, 2025
During the week of April 14-21, 2025, cybersecurity incidents decreased compared to the previous week, with 10 vulnerability events and 18 data breach/incident events affecting 8.5 million individuals across various sectors. Healthcare was the most targeted industry with 5 incidents, while malware and ransomware attacks were the most common cause (6 incidents), followed by software vulnerabilities and system misconfiguration exploits.

**When you are in the business of trolling and insulting a bunch of people, make sure to patch your infrastructure. Because everyone has a beef against you. And your old PHP version from 2016 will be hacked, like it did for 4chan. And MAKE SURE TO UPDATE ALL WINDOWS. They are actively hacked.**

Sala Rusconi

In the Archiginnasio there is a room called the Sala Rusconi. Named after Pietro Giacomo Rusconi (1865-1916), it contains many rare and valuable books and manuscripts which were collected by him. These were donated to Bologna after the death of his wife Luisa Verzaglia in 1919 - as the couple had not had any children. You unfortunately cannot go into the room now but you can peek through the iron bar door from the Sala Stabat Mater.
The portrait you see over the door is Rusconi himself.
I wanted to give the photo the feel of an old-fashioned illustration to compliment the treasures and antiquities in this library.

(Per quelli che sanno un po' di dialetto bolognese, non trovate un po' ironico che ci sia una sala così piena di saggezza e storia e si chiama... Rusco... ni. 😂)

…knowledge is not only knowledge of an object, but also knowledge of the conditions in which the knowledge is gained.

www.linkedin.com#iptheft #ai #irony #fairtraining | Ed Greig | 27 commentsDear Bill, what do you think about stealing now? I was rereading John Markoff's excellent and illuminating What The Dormouse Said, about the role psychedelics and Sixties counterculture had in shaping the early personal computing industry and came across this open letter from Bill (Then at Micro-Soft with a hyphen!) in the Homebrew Computer Club newsletter. He lays out his frustrations with the unauthorised free (and sometimes paid) distribution of the Altair BASIC software he and Paul Allen and Monte Davidoff had created, something he calls out as theft. It's a compelling argument and one that feels very relevant today reading the excellent work being done on #IPtheft and #AI by the likes of Johan Cedmar-Brandstedt, Virginie Berger, Evan Winston, Ann Handley, Ed Newton-Rex and my CSC Global Alumni colleague Dr Elizabeth Mkoba. As Gates notes in his letter, without fair payment for their work, there won't be great software in the future, in the same way that by not paying artists you use for training we will have less great art both to enjoy but also to train on and by depriving websites of traffic with AI summaries you will end up with less great content both for us to read but also to summarise. Stealing doesn't build sustainable knowledge economies. It seems to work if you're colonising somewhere and extracting resources (See history for more details) but it's obviously morally abhorrent and arguably now being shown as unsustainable in the long run as well. And it won't work here. That's why we have intellectual property law as the knowledge economy equivalent of property law (And as others have pointed out, it's unlikely that Jack and Elon would enjoy it if we deleted all property law). The argument against it is that development would have been slower but when you look at the pace AI development has been moving (And the money that has been spent) a few months or even a couple years more (At worst) would not make a material difference to humanity or governments and economies, it really only matters to stock prices. Constraint breeds innovation. DeepSeek have still used stolen training data but they didn't have access to the resources that conventional wisdom said were absolutely necessary to build an LLM and look where we are. So let's not build the future on the same morally abhorrent foundations we built the past on, because it may seem quicker and easier at the time but it will come back to bite you at some point. I'd therefore love to see Bill take a similar stand to this again and back a fair application of copyright and IP law. Full text of the letter (Too long for Alt-text) is in the first comment. I hope this constitutes fair use otherwise: #irony. #FairTraining | 27 comments on LinkedIn

I don't see how you make this statement provable.

Just because this #colour can't be reproduced by #LED or #LCD, I don't think that means it's never been experienced before.

I think this just means lasers can produce this colour and LEDs and LCDs can't. Am I missing something?

They seem to be extrapolating here, don't they?

In Jung’s view, knowledge is always an interaction between subject and object, a viewpoint that he had already expressed in Psychological Types in 1921.
