Teacups. Tiny monsters. Enjoying a peaceful moment to themselves. Humans aren't the only ones who enjoy a spot of tea now and again. Little monsters have been know to slip quietly into kitchens when no one is around and sneak a sip of two of freshly brewed sweetness. As another day ends and darkness falls,
worries begin to grow. The monsters realize they
are now far away from their homes and entering
a world that no one has ever been before.

Anxious whispers and tearful sobs burst out.
"Beware! Beware! one monster pleads.
There is danger ahead!" But no one has stopped
for sleep this night. The leaders keep them
marching, marching, towards a distant light.

Arms outstretched, with a slight scowl on its face, it appears to be thinking of something important - perhaps what it would like to eat for lunch. Midnight Monsters: A Startled Moontinkifer
Do not be afraid. Like many night creatures, they just wish to be left alone. These secretive beings often hide in the shadows, except when the moon is full and bright. The midnight moon is their time of wonder and if you happen to be in the right place at the right time, you just may witness some magical happenings. This particular midnight monster is called Moontinkifer and can be found high up in the Balkan mountain range on the border between Bulgaria and eastern Serbia . It was not easy getting to this destination, but I have found it worth the effort, expense and skinned knees. Legend says that if one is lucky enough to spot them during the day, they appear as drab, colorless creatures, almost invisible against the mountain landscape of rocks and boulders. They shine (literally) at night when they come out of their hiding places to dance. Moonlight causes a shimmering transformation from dull gray to a luminous rainbow colored glow! It is believed that the glimmer of incandescent color and magical movements is their way of attracting a mate. Otherwise, they appear to be quite shy, non-aggressive individuals, who unfortunately, startle easily.

Monsters have babies too.
Baby monsters are even harder to find than the elusive "baby" pigeon. Very few folks can say that they've seen them, let alone created their portraits. I have been lucky. As you might imagine, monster parents can be a bit protective. Mothers in particular. They consider us (humans) more than a bit strange and potentially dangerous. It took most of my free time, lots of monster "treats" and carefully followed Monster Etiquette to befriend just a few of them. Even then, I felt a bit nervous and on edge as I made sketches of their most beloved offspring. It is always a good idea to remind oneself that monsters are ultimately unpredictable creatures, and should be given proper respect at all times.

In a stark brownish room, in front of a wallpaper decorated with symbols, sits a rather unusual, disgruntled pinecone-shaped creature on a Chenille upholstered bench. Grasped in one of its multiple claws, a broken piece of blue yarn. This explains the mildly distressed expression on its face, with is barely hidden within the cone. Underneath the chair, the full skein safely resides, away from its occupants ire. You cannot hear it, but it is growling without humor. I highly recommend staying far away, for the time being. :-)
