Hopeful Humanizer<p>Recently I saw <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/ReggieJackson" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ReggieJackson</span></a> at a sportscaster round table reminiscing about his experience as a black player in minor league baseball in the Jim Crow South. He was brutally honest about the <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/racism" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>racism</span></a> he faced. Legal <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/slavery" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>slavery</span></a> may have ended, but practical slavery, the <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/colonization" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>colonization</span></a> of ones’ own person, was still in full force. The only way he survived as a black player was because white team mates and managers stood up for him: “If he doesn&#39;t eat here, WE don&#39;t eat here.” I seem to recall that when my late father-in-law was stationed in the Jim Crow South, he was ordered not to eat in segregated towns that refused to serve black service members. <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Solidarity" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Solidarity</span></a> with the <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/oppressed" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>oppressed</span></a> was the answer. <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Oppression" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Oppression</span></a> remains unchallenged as long as we are not willing to deny ourselves the benefits of membership in the <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/privileged" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>privileged</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/class" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>class</span></a>.</p>
