Anindo Mahmud<p>Using <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> to create a Ghibli-style art of yourself, while extremely harmless, is an absolute disservice to Hayao Miyazaki, the founder of Studio Ghibli.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/HayaoMiyazaki" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HayaoMiyazaki</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Ghibli" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ghibli</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/StudioGhibli" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>StudioGhibli</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/OpenAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenAI</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/RipOff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RipOff</span></a></p>

It was worse forty years ago, when many things people today assume are an essential part of the basic service were optional add-ons.</p><p>Monopolies didn't help, either. For example, I had a girlfriend who lived *just* outside of my local calling area, in a town about 65 kilometers / 40 miles away. It was in the same province, so the phone company had a monopoly on calls from her to me, or me to her. If I waited until after midnight, the rates were 60% off, so it would only cost me about $0.32 *per minute* to call her. During the day, it was $0.78 per minute.</p><p>This was at a time when the minimum wage was $4.25 per hour. So working for an hour meant I could call her for five minutes during the day - without accounting for income tax eating some of it.</p><p>In comparison, they didn't have a monopoly on calls to or from places outside the province. So I could call L.A., thousands of kilometers away, for about $0.25 per minute during the day.</p><p><a href="https://mindly.social/tags/ripoff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ripoff</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/phone" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>phone</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/LongDistance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LongDistance</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/monopoly" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>monopoly</span></a></p>
Mactonex<p>Once again I am reminded what a monumental ripoff uk service station food is. £4.99 for a soggy looking chicken wrap. It’s not like it’s difficult and expensive to get the stuff here - it’s on the fucking M1. <a href="https://toot.community/tags/motorway" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>motorway</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/serviceStation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>serviceStation</span></a> <a href="https://toot.community/tags/RipOff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RipOff</span></a></p>

My eggs are up about $2/dozen or about 17 cents per egg. None of these places buy eggs a dozen at a time, so their increased cost per egg is probably less than 1 cent.<br>What a <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/RipOff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RipOff</span></a></p>
