Dave Rahardja<p>Some things I didn’t know about Indonesian spices that I learned from this video:</p><p>Chili peppers did not come to <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Indonesia" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Indonesia</span></a> until the 1500s. They were brought over from South and Central America by Portuguese traders.</p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Sambal" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Sambal</span></a> existed in Indonesia long before chili peppers arrived. They used long peppers (piper retrofactum) instead of capsicums. But chili peppers eventually displaced long peppers almost entirely.</p><p>Chili peppers were called “peppers” despite having nothing to do with black peppers because Christopher Columbus thought he arrived in India, from which Europe has been importing black peppers. He called them peppers because they were spicy like black peppers.</p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/food" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>food</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/peppers" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>peppers</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/spices" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>spices</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/video" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>video</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZfFPH803co" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=yZfFPH803c</span><span class="invisible">o</span></a></p>
