From the Knave column, Oakland Tribune, Sunday, November 05, 1967:

IT ISN'T every day you meet a Countess running a brick-yard - especially one who has had more than 50 years of success in its management and admits to 87 years of vibrant living.

It's even more unusual when the Countess tells you she has dedicated her life to the memory of her French-Canadian parents and is as proud of her Oakland heritage as anything else she possesses. And her possessions are indeed prodigious.

There are other admirable characteristics about Countess Lillian Remillard Dandini, the brickyard proprietor who, we hasten to inform you, was born in a modest eight-room, two-story dwelling at Tenth and Clay Streets in Oakland ...

"Did you know that in the 1960s there was a heliport next to the Ferry Building in San Francisco? From the 1960s to the 1980s, SFO Helicopter Airlines operated local helicopter flights between San Francisco and Oakland. In 1976, the company operated seventy-two flights a day to and from SFO. Did you ever fly on SFO Helicopter Airlines? Image: SFO Helicopter Airlines, downtown San Francisco heliport, 1968. Haight & Ashbury, 1968
What's wrong with this picture? When I got it with a few other tourist snaps I didn't think much of it, but looking closely I can see how things were changing in the neighborhood. (dated 1968 from others in the set)

Seals Stadium, April 15 1958
First Giants Game in San Francisco (the first Major League game on the west coast)
15 Amateur slides just discovered in the pile. Years ago I was told that the frame for that flower horseshoe was still in the backyard at Pinelli's Flowerland on Clement

Ocean Beach, January 1914
A huge storm battered the seawall in front of the original Beach Chalet (which was on the west side of Great Highway, duh) It survived the storm, but was later moved to 24th Avenue (where it caught fire and burned 🫤) recent photos soon to be added to SFMemory

Geary near 19th Ave, 1959
A little something for everyone on this Richmond District block. The Wonder-Lite Do-Nut Shop, Silhouette Slenderizing, and Arko Health Food. These buildings still stand in modified form. (from a negative in the SFPL Assessor's Collection)

SP's Bayshore Roundhouse, 1941 & 2025
Last week I rode my bike through an open gate to check out the Bayshore Roundhouse (then got locked in!) I have images showing the turntable being replaced in 1941. There's not much left there to orient the pics, but this is recognizable.

Octavia & Jackson , circa 1930
A view southeast from the intersection showing the large yard of the Spreckels Mansion (2080 Washington) Notable is the lack of the huge hedge that surrounds the yard now. Part of a collection of lantern slides I recently acquired.

"#Onthisday in 1889 Lockheed Aircraft Corporation founder Allan Lockheed was born in Fremont, California. Born Allan Haines Loughead, he formed the Alco Hydro-Aeroplane Company with his older brother, Malcolm Loughead, in 1912. In 1915, the brothers opened a flying concession at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, selling rides on their Model G aircraft. After changing his last name to Lockheed (the phonetic spelling of Loughead), Allen formed the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation with Jack Northrop in 1926 and began developing the highly successful Vega. After going into receivership in 1932, a group of investors bought it and formed the Lockheed Aircraft Company. In 1995, Lockheed merged with Martin Marietta to form the Lockheed Martin Company." Islais Creek, June 1901
View south from about Nevada & Crescent (near the farmers market) toward the Spring Valley Water pipe. Alemany Boulevard & the I280 Freeway dominate this view today, but water pipe (or a later version of it) still runs underground here.

Pennsylvania & 19th, circa 1956
Still doing some test scans on these Kodachrome stereo slides. (close to 1000 were recently discovered) I'm not convinced I should scan both images for all these. Here's a pair, I encourage people to show me what they can do with them

Broderick near Jackson, 1963
An amazing cache of house images with dates ranging from 1955-1970 have been discovered. There are over 1000 time capsule images from an unknown source. They're in a challenging format however, Kodachrome stereo views. this one is just a taste.

Alameda Aerial, October 1955
Spent a few hours at the National Archives in San Bruno, scanning over 150 aerial 1950s-60s views around the bay. Periodically we'd come across odd constructions with concentric arcs repeated in different locales. Can you guess what they are?
