“Amberley excelled at chess — one mark, Watson, of a scheming mind.”
— Sherlock Holmes, in “The Adventure of the Retired Colourman”

Sherlock Holmes: The Woman in Green (1945) (Scotland Yard is baffled by a series of murders across London)
“You have probably never heard of Professor Moriarty?” said he.
“Never.”
“Aye, there's the genius and the wonder of the thing!” he cried. “The man pervades London, and no one has heard of him. That's what puts him on a pinnacle in the records of crime.”
— Sherlock Holmes and Watson, in “The Final Problem”
“And the murderer?”
“Is a tall man, left-handed, limps with the right leg, wears thick-soled shooting-boots and a gray cloak, smokes Indian cigars, uses a cigar-holder, and carries a blunt pen-knife in his pocket. There are several other indications, but these may be enough to aid us in our search.”
— Lestrade and Holmes, in “The Boscombe Valley Mystery”
“Still, it is an error to argue in front of your data. You find yourself insensibly twisting them round to fit your theories.”
— Sherlock Holmes, in “The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge”

“We are going well,” said he, looking out the window and glancing at his watch. “Our rate at present is fifty-three and a half miles an hour.”
“I have not observed the quarter-mile posts,” said I.
“Nor have I. But the telegraph posts upon this line are sixty yards apart, and the calculation is a simple one.”
— Sherlock Holmes and Watson, in “Silver Blaze”
“It is always a joy to meet an American, Mr. Moulton, for I am one of those who believe that the folly of a monarch and the blundering of a minister in far-gone years will not prevent our children from being some day citizens of the same world-wide country under a flag which shall be a quartering of the Union Jack with the Stars and Stripes.”
— Sherlock Holmes, in “The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor”

The relations between us in those latter days were peculiar. He was a man of habits, narrow and concentrated habits, and I had become one of them. As an institution I was like the violin, the shag tobacco, the old black pipe, the index books, and others perhaps less excusable.
— Watson, in “The Adventure of the Creeping Man”
There can be no doubt that Stapleton exercised an influence over her which may have been love or may have been fear, or very possibly both, since they are by no means incompatible emotions.
— Sherlock Holmes, in “The Hound of the Baskervilles”
Geek out: "[I]n the first century BCE, Roman leader Julius Caesar gave his lover, Servilia (mother to his murderer Marcus Brutus), an imported black pearl worth 6 million sesterces. It’s often described as one of the most valuable pearls of all time."
Is this the 'black pearl of the Borgias' in the Adventure of the Six Napoleons? #SherlockHolmes
“Let us consider the claims of Whitaker's Almanac. It is in common use. It has the requisite number of pages. It is in double column. Though reserved in its earlier vocabulary, it becomes, if I remember right, quite garrulous towards the end.”
— Sherlock Holmes, in “The Valley of Fear”

Arturo PÉREZ-REVERTE, El problema final.
As I did so I struck against an elderly, deformed man, who had been behind me, and I knocked down several books which he was carrying. I remember that as I picked them up, I observed the title of one of them, _The Origin of Tree Worship_, and it struck me that the fellow must be some poor bibliophile, who, either as a trade or as a hobby, was a collector of obscure volumes.
— Watson, in “The Adventure of the Empty House”
“Mr. Wilson's assistant counts for a good deal in this mystery of the Red Headed League. I am sure that you inquired your way merely in order that you might see him.”
“Not him.”
“What then?”
“The knees of his trousers.”
— Watson and Holmes, in “The Red Headed League”
“Well,” said I, “you call that love, Mr. Carruthers, but I should call it selfishness.”
“Maybe the two things go together.”
— Watson and Bob Carruthers, in “The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist”
“The tragedy has been so uncommon, so complete and of such personal importance to so many people, that we are suffering from a plethora of surmise, conjecture, and hypothesis. The difficulty is to detach the framework of fact — of absolute undeniable fact — from the embellishments of theorists and reporters.”
— Sherlock Holmes, in “Silver Blaze”
