#OTD Aug. 11, 1962 – Willie McCovey hits a pinch-hit, three-run homer in the sixth inning off Don Drysdale to lift the San Francisco Giants to a 5-4 victory over the Dodgers before a sellout crowd at Candlestick Park. McCovey, pinch-hitting for starter Billy Pierce, blasted Drysdale’s 3-2 offering high into the right field bleachers to give the Giants a 5-3 lead they would not relinquish. McCovey’s home run gave Pierce his 200th career victory and handed Drysdale his first loss in 12 starts.
The Dodgers protested the excessive watering of the Candlestick Park infield, a tactic they claimed was to stop speedster Maury Wills. Wills protested so vehemently that he was ejected from the game by umpire Ed Sudol in the third inning. #SFGiants #ForeverGiant #Stretch
