variantPlanned oil and gas expansion in the U.S. accounts for more than a third of prospective global oil and gas expansion through 2050. This expansion alone dooms us to greater than 1.5C warming if carried through. Existing authorizations must be cancelled by the U.S. and all oil-dependent industries (transportation, heating, manufacturing, etc.) must shrink or shift to renewables faster than is comfortable or "profitable". This will lead to temporary scarcity and social shifts, but is superior to cooking whole countries and damaging everything else with extreme weather events.
