Since when is it ok to charge a surcharge when you pay by credit card? Just got my bill from Toyota for a major maintenance service and am advised they are now charging a 3% surcharge for credit card payments. Not cash or debit, just credit card. Just started this last month. When I called, they said , “this came down from corporate.” How is this even legal? #creditcards #surchargesoncredit
@annietime It's 100% legal in CA I know for sure. Came down quite a few years ago now. Almost every mechanic I've used recently charges it.
@chefraven @annietime It's not in California as of July 1. Most fees have to be included in the advertised price as of that date. (Restaurants are excepted though.)
@kingrat @annietime Per the CA Dept of Justice website:
Does a business need to include credit card processing fees in the advertised price?
Generally, no, because a credit card processing fee is not a mandatory fee if the customer can avoid the fee by paying a different way (e.g. cash.) However, if a business only accepts credit cards as a form of payment, then the credit card fee is mandatory and would have to be included in the advertised price.
