Main Staircase, Powell Library, University of California, Los Angeles. Shot on an Iphone 14 Plus Finished in 1929 it is an example of Romanesque Revival

@cvvhrn As an undergrad at both UCLA and UC Berkeley my work provided me with full faculty library privileges, so I have seen the insides of many libraries on both campuses.

I have spent many a long day (and evening) in the Powell library during the late 1960's. I've felt an Islamic/Moorish design influence.

(Do you know about the buried bridge that's almost next to the Powell library?)

Less aesthetic was the main library at UC Berkeley - it had glass floors in the stacks so you could see the underside (blurry through the frosted glass) of a person above you.

@karlauerbach I did not! We have not been to the UC Berk. Library and only once in the UCLA (my son just started there)

@cvvhrn Next time you are on the UCLA campus go to the area between Royce Hall and the Powell Library. Turn to the east - towards the large quad (and *away* from the stairs that lead down the the sports fields.)

Walk to the east. When you are in the middle of a large quad (Dickson court) with Shoenberg (sp, music) on your right and you will appear to be on a road with low brick walls. You are on the top of the buried bridge that used to cross a large ravine that ran through the campus.

Here's an article about it, with photo. (By-the-way, I started UCLA in .... hang on ... 1967 - so I got all the "fun", including tear gas, but not as much as when I moved to UC Berkeley.)

UCLA Luskin Conference Center · The Story of UCLA's Hidden Bridge | UCLA Luskin Conference CenterTake a walk through Dickson Plaza near UCLA’s famous Royce Hall and Powell Library, and you might see a sign along the road that reads “Weight Limit” for a bridge. Unless you’re really pre-occupied, you’ll probably wonder why such a sign exists – where there clearly doesn’t appear to be a bridge! Here’s the story...

@karlauerbach Well the present day may have gotten a. taste of that with the recent protests lol. But that is way way cool. Thanks for heads up! I will check it out the next time we are on campus

@cvvhrn Don't miss the sculpture garden in north campus - I used to hang out there (and some of the pieces make cool sounds when you pound on 'em with your hands.)

Also, don't know if it is still there, but there was a great Japanese garden, it was off campus.

The Berkeley campus has more surprises than the UCLA campus. I am up next to the UC Santa Cruz campus which is filled with meadows, bridges, canyons, redwoods, and stuff.

@karlauerbach My sister went to Berkeley and we live in Palo Alto so I am way more familiar with Berkeley and Stanford so exploring UCLA will be fun.

On the other hand Westwood does not have Berkeley Bowl

@cvvhrn Yeah, UCLA doesn't have anything like Strawberry Creek or Faculty Glade (where everyone went to get stoned.) But when you visit UCLA you can visit my old work area - where ARPAnet IMP #1 was located, the first node on what would become the Internet.

Almost every day I would get lunch at the student union and the Stone's 1000 light years from home was always playing and I seemed to always be standing in line next to this really nice guy - kinda tall, played basketball, played the co-pilot in the movie Airplane.

My office on campus was in the building that has an open mesh roof and a garden inside - it's called Palm Court.
