If you need to defend yourself, start by training. Train every day.
Two simple self defense tools you can use are yawara sticks and tactical pens.
These are inconspicuous items you can carry in a purse or pocket and you can seriously injure someone or even kill them with these tools.
However keep in mind they're also possibly considered concealed weapons. Carrying a concealed weapon is a felony. Check your state laws, sometimes there is a distinction between a blunt and pointed or sharp weapon.
You can make your own yawara sticks easily. I've made good ones from broom handles, dowels, and bamboo pieces I found around the neighborhood.
More serious versions of these weapons can be purchased online. Again, it might be illegal to carry these.
There are many videos on YouTube where you can learn basic techniques using these weapons but if you want to be able to use these items in a dangerous situation, you have to practice so that it becomes completely natural. You do not want to have to think about it when you need to use it.
Practice every day until it's totally natural.
