“Huffman previously showed interest in potentially introducing a new type of subreddit with "exclusive content or private areas" that Reddit users would pay to access.”

“Huffman also said that Reddit is “laying the foundation” for the ability to monetize commerce within subreddits this year, including when Reddit users buy something from another user via discussion on a subreddit.”

“Reddit executives also discussed how they might introduce more ads into the social media platform.”

To be honest, adding a paid marketplace system is actually not a bad idea, especially if they can provide escrow/anonymization services to reduce risk for both buyer and seller. But the rest…yeah, not so much.

Ars Technica · Reddit will lock some content behind a paywall this year, CEO saysBy Scharon Harding

@drahardja If reddit set the paid subreddits up such that anyone who wanted to participate had to pay a little subscription fee... that honestly wouldn't be bad? Someone's gotta pay the bills, and we know how corrosive using advertising (or VC funds) can be.

@wordshaper I think a subscription-or-ads model for the whole site would be fine, a la YouTube Premium. But paywalling subreddits I feel conveys a “monetize everything” incentive to subreddit mods that will lead to the YouTube-ification of subreddits in producing high-engagement content at the expense of quality.

IMO anything you can do with paywalled subreddits, you can already do with private subreddits today, without the pressure to monetize.

@drahardja I already quit using it and everything I'm seeing makes me not want to go back. I found myself a good Lemmy instant so I'm just gonna stick with that

@fluffykittycat Oh same. I quit when Spez went AI-paywall mad.

@drahardja after the 3rd time I got banned I didn't go back. this was around APIgate
