I’m sincerely hoping that people who have conferences or conventions planned in the US in 2025 and beyond are seriously considering relocating their venues elsewhere, or going fully virtual, given the hostile environment in this country.
If I lived outside the US, I wouldn’t even consider traveling here at this time, because it would literally risk my health and freedom to do so. I have a feeling event attendance is going to drop to reflect that sentiment.
@drahardja I'm also hoping that conferences which are US-only think about their locations too, since there's a significant and growing chunk of the US where it's not safe for many folks to travel to domestically.
@wordshaper I’ve been saying that for years. Luckily (in a grim sort of way), COVID has taught us that virtual attendance is a viable option for many. But yeah, holding your conference in Texas, Florida, or North Carolina? You’ve just excluded or endangered a huge chunk of your attendee population.
There are reasons that the next few conferences I will be calling into are all hybrid and have the in-person components in Spain, South Africa, Japan, and Finland.
@drahardja what people are still failing to understand on top of it, is that it is no longer safe for people in the US to travel, *period*.
If some TSA agent decides you look like an "illegal", you will be disappeared. Which conveniently covers anyone and everyone who isn't a cishet white male.
@rootwyrm @drahardja Actually, you're wrong, but only enough small way. They have targeted people who are white But who have said or are saying things that they disagree with, Right along with those people of color. There is literally no one in the country who is safe. But people traveling from other countries are especially unsafe. I don't dare go to visit Canada, they might not let me come back or might lock me up when I arrive.
@drahardja seriously, I wonder how the Olympic Games in LA and the shared FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the States shall work…
