Sly and the Family Stone, Fresh (Epic/CBS Records, 1973). This record is a New Year’s Day listening tradition for me. The songwriting and playing are so bright and uplifting, the pockets are so deep, it’s the perfect way to kick off a new year. Extra points for Sly being an Oakland guy, and this was recorded at the Record Plant in Sausalito.
