I often see white people complain that nobody will educate them about racism.
Let's set aside them making it to adulthood without knowing key facts about how the world works. Let's ignore that they've apparently never bothered to read a book. Let's just grudgingly move past their entitlement to think they can peep like baby birds and have predigested knowledge delivered to them instantly.
Let me instead focus on how these supposedly curious people do not want to know shit. Here's my latest example. And before I could even reply, Mr White Fragility blocked me.
I really try to assume good faith. I was once a chump who grew up with deep ignorance of white supremacy, of how pervasive and insidious it is. Breaking out of that ignorance was not comfortable, but it was worthwhile. So for people who appear to be sincere, I try to give one sincere useful reply, to see what happens.
This almost never goes well. As DiAngelo writes, "White Fragility is a state in which even a minimum amount of racial stress becomes intolerable, triggering a range of defensive moves. These moves include the outward display of emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and behaviors such as argumentation, silence, and leaving the stress-inducing situation. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium." https://libjournal.uncg.edu/ijcp/article/viewFile/249/116
So in short, if you are a white person wondering why nobody will educate you, the answer may be that you're acting like the many, many white people who claim they want to learn but then do absolutely anything besides learn.
