This was totally a shock to me. Care of community is almost a reflex for me, and the pandemic really shook my faith. I spend a lot of time thinking about what it would take to create communities where mutual care is the default.
@williampietri it's been a struggle for me to remain at all hopeful about the future in the face of what we all witnessed as everyone's attention to the impacts of the COVID pandemic petered out. as a GenX-er, i didn't have all that much belief in the good in humanity as a whole, and this sure hasn't helped.
@williampietri Less capitalism would probably be a good place to start. The ~free~ bailed-out-by-tax-payers market demands sacrificing yourself for the shareholder. Its difficult to convince someone under this duress to care for anyone but themselves in any actionable manner.
@what_about_second_breakfast For sure. And it's not even markets themselves that I'd call the problem here. A lot of capitalists these days are opposed to healthy markets because they act as checks on their power to exploit both consumers and labor.
@williampietri YES! It legitimately shocked me how upsetting some people found the idea of giving a shit about others.
@williampietri I saw defiant and personally frightening behavior around masking in airplanes. The flight attendants were pretending not to notice and I don't blame them.
I am glad I resisted making a scene in the airport when the person mocked me again to rub it in.
Consistent messaging would have helped, but the wrong crew was in charge in the US. Other places tried harder, and NZ almost stood it off.
@williampietri I don't know whether I'm in different communities than you or whether I just had different expectations. Although I can see enough complexities in pandemic response that I also don't quite how to interpret level of caring versus different assessments of costs and benefits.
