Q2. What advice do you give people on how much to spend on locks relative to their bike value? How do you tailor this advice for someone's situation?
@crschmidt A2. I heard some rule of thumb a while back.. Was it 10%? That seems ok with me. I think it's based more on sentimental value to me. I think the main lock I use cost a little over $100. Not cheap, but I use it often. I still prefer to avoid leaving my bike outside for more than a few hours if possible.
I guess if someone's using a bike that they don't care so much about then any lock might be helpful. If I see a friend with a thin cable lock I might tell them to get something stronger.
