That’s right—today is the 50th anniversary of the coup d’état of Chile, where the United States (thanks to Richard Nixon and the CIA) helped Augusto Pinochet overthrow the democratically-elected president Salvador Allende. Pinochet ruled with an iron fist, and was believed to have executed and disappeared thousands of leftist opponents, interned more than 80,000 people, and tortured tens of thousands.
