SF workers have the most expensive commute in the US, study says

@elliots If your commute works with transit, it's not so bad. Looks like BART from Walnut Creek (just to pick a far-flung example) to SF is approx $12 round trip. $12 * 5 (days/week) * 50 (weeks/year, assuming you take *some* vacation) is $3k a year. If you pay for parking maybe another $5/day? $4250 then. Anyone want to check my math?
Other services like CalTrain and ferries are a bit pricier, but in the same ballpark.
But I don't know how they came up with that $50/day figure. Even if you drive, gas+wear/ tear on your car+insurance+ bridge toll, etc doesn't seem like it comes close to that. I suppose a lot depends on how often you want to buy a new car.
Maybe they're assigning a $ value to lost time, but if they are, they should say so.
Is there something wrong with me that when people throw out claims like this, I want to see the numbers?
(I'm not denying the basic premise that commuting is expensive here).
@14mission Yeah, it seems fishy to me. I'm not even sure if it means SF residents or SF workers. If it's SF residents, and over a third of us walk/bike/transit, which is, say under $2k. Then does that mean the drivers are paying $15k+/year just for their commute portion of driving?! Maybe...
