Thanks for your replies.

I'm just planning to use hookup a TV to a laptop just to stream movies & watch local/national news & tv programming. Not going to use the TV to actually do any work on the computer or to visit any website.

I tried hooking up my 15 yr old 56" TV & my 5 yr old w/an cable but I could not get them to connect. The TV has 5 HDMI inputs. I use them all & they all work. So, the problem was w/me &/or laptop. It either doesn't have the right features to be able to mirror the display on the TV or I didn't set the settings correctly.

I want to buy a new 60" (or larger) to replace the Vivio and another laptop just to link to it but, after doing some research there seem to be certain specs that each need to be able to work together.

Any specific suggestions for a combo that you KNOW will work would be appreciated. My budget would be between $5-10K for both.

@sgt1372 if you are just going to use the computer for streaming video like you use your TV today, you can just use the TV as-is.

If you're planning to use it at a desk with a monitor, TVs are generally pretty bad as computer monitors. They are designed to be viewed from across the room and usually don't look great up close (especially with text).

Monitors can get really big if your budget is infinite but once you get above 30-32" diagonal for a 16:9 monitor, the ergonomics start to really suffer.

@sgt1372 @mookie @Starcade I don't have any specific recommendations, sorry. Every laptop I've ever used that had an HDMI output worked with every HDMI device I tried to use it with, including random TVs in hotel rooms etc. As far as I know it is universal and there shouldn't be device-specific compatibility issues (outside of specialty features like 3D or HDR).

Somebody else mentioned input switching. On TVs I've used, there's been a button on the remote to cycle between inputs (usually just labeled "input"). I'd check the manual for your smart TV to see what needs to be done for yours.
