The first rule of Reply Guy Club is to refuse to understand what Reply Guy behavior is. Obviously, every conversation that they haven't been blocked from would be happy to have them as a strident participant, regardless of their knowledge or expertise. What could a question possibly be, if not an invitation to them personally to answer? 
@williampietri Most of the individual pieces of Reply Guy behavior I can sorta understand, maybe even have done myself (hopefully less so recently). But the part you mention here, about doubling down when challenged, still baffles me a bit. I guess engagement looks like an invitation to further reply, attention is a reward, and people saying negative things about their posts is an opportunity to explain oneself? At least, that's the closest I have to an explanation.
