#Protesters rally in #PortlandME, advocating for protection of rights amid Trump tensions

Story by Allyson Lapierre, WGME

PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) -- "Making their voices be heard on a day of #revolution, a rally on Saturday pays tribute to the #250thAnniversary of the 'shot heard around the world,' a day that marks the start of the Revolutionary War.

" 'They’re taking away my Social Security and my #MaineCare away from me...which side are you on?' Olivia McDermott, who has #DownSyndrome, said.

"McDermott came to advocate for herself and others who have #disabilities who depend on #SocialSecurity and #Medicaid.

" 'I get really upset that this is happening to me and other people with #disabilities. They go to school like this, and I don’t want people to feel uncomfortable about it,' McDermott said.

"Olivia's mom, Maura Mcdermott, is a #SpecialEducationTeacher. She's worried the $Trump administration could take away those benefits.

" 'We need to not cut the services. We need to expand #MedicaidForAll people, and we need to #TaxTheRich. Enough of this,' Maura said.

"Other protestors voiced concerns about state politics, specifically about Maine senators.

" '#SusanCollins had better vote 'no, no, no' to the #SAVEAct because those are all voting rights, and we need voting for next election,' Nina McKee, a Scarborough resident, said.

"Despite the anniversary of the #AmericanRevolution, protesters on Saturday said there's little to feel #patriotic about.

" 'I can’t even express the need for us to stand up against what is happening in our country. It is beyond consumption,' McKee said.

" 'There’s no good thing going on right now, so any change is for the better,' Duncan Potter, a Brunswick resident, said."

Some scenes from the #AugustaME #HandsOff rally (not my images -- from the Kennebec Journal)

by Hannah Kaufman, Kennebec Journal

AUGUSTA — "By about 2:20 p.m., the protest in Augusta had effectively ended, but for a smaller group, the march continued, with some making their third and fourth laps around the block.
Organizers had intended the march to take place on the sidewalk, but the width of Capitol Street was filled with a throng of protesters shortly before 2 p.m.

"Vivian Myers-Jones, a protester from New Brunswick, Canada, said an organizer estimated 3,000 people were at the protest during its peak.

"Several students from Bates College in Lewiston said they came to Augusta to protest in support of #Palestine. One student, Dylan, said action on the Israel-Hamas war is overdue.

"'We’ve been seeing a genocide unfolding before our eyes for years now, and it’s overdue that people are doing something,' he said. 'We’ve been trying to make change, and I think some people are being shocked into action now, which is good to see.'

"Another student, Robert, said it’s important to exercise the right to protest.
'We’re fighting to continue fighting — about Palestine, about everything that’s going on in this country,' he said.
It’s important that we come together now.'"

Live updates: #Mainers rally across the state to protest #Trump policies

On Saturday, more than a dozen '#HandsOff' rallies were set to be held throughout Maine as part of a national day of action targeting the new Trump administration.

"On Saturday, more than a dozen rallies were set to be held throughout Maine as part of a national day of action to protest the policies of President Donald Trump.
The “Hands Off” rallies were scheduled from #WellsME to as far north as #LubecME. In Portland, protesters gathered in Monument Square at 11 a.m., while one of the day’s first protests began in Freeport just after 8 a.m.

"Portland police said they were aware of the Monument Square demonstration in advance and would 'be giving it special attention as we do all protests that we are aware of within the city,' department spokesperson Brad Nadeau said in an email Friday afternoon.

"Saturday’s protests were focused on President Donald Trump and billionaire adviser #ElonMusk’s efforts to cut the federal workforce through mass firings, rumored threats to safety-net programs like Social Security and Medicaid, and heightened action by immigration officers as part of a massive deportation effort.

"Though Saturday’s demonstrations were expected to be relatively large, Mainers have been taking to the streets for weeks. In addition to those protesting the federal government’s policies, hundreds have also called for Maine Gov. #JanetMills to relent following her high-profile clash with Trump."

Maine child care workers to strike Tuesday over proposed cuts to state stipend

At least 200 child care workers are planning to leave work and head to #AugustaME to protest proposed cuts to a stipend program they say has been critical to stabilizing the industry.

by Riley Board, March 3, 2025

"Child care workers in Maine are planning to strike Tuesday morning to show their opposition to proposed budget cuts targeting a state stipend program that day care operators say has allowed the industry to stabilize.

"As of Monday afternoon, as many as 200 early childhood education workers were planning to participate, and at least 15 child care centers from Saco to Oxford said they would close for at least part of the day. The workers will gather in the State House rotunda at 8:30 a.m.

"The stipend was created in 2021 and provided an extra $200 a month to all child care workers. It has grown since then into a tiered system that provides between $240 and $540 a month based on education and experience. Day care operators say it has allowed them to raise starting wages for teachers and work toward full staffing.

"Gov. Janet Mills proposed cutting that program in half in her biennial budget this year after warning last year that expansions couldn’t be sustained. She has proposed returning to the 2022 level of funding, as well as eliminating a newer $2.5 million program that covers child care tuition for people who work in the industry.

"The Legislature’s Appropriations and Finance Committee last week heard and read testimony overwhelmingly in opposition to the cuts. The Health and Human Services Committee is set to vote on them Wednesday.

[...]

"Day care centers in Portland, Gorham, Brunswick, Scarborough, Saco, Cape Elizabeth and Oxford all plan to close for at least part of the day for the strike, Marden said.

"Hannah Marshal, program director for Windham-Raymond School Age Child Care in Windham, said the center won’t open until the afternoon so that 11 staff members can travel to Augusta and participate in the rally."
