After a lunch break in an old theatre (the best steak we've ever eaten) accompanied by a tango show on stage at eye level right next to our table (superb) we headed off for the final bit of sightseeing in Buenos Aires before returning to our ship.

This is La Boca, a district of brightly coloured houses and shops, many decorated with figurines outside and on balconies, and filled with artists and tango dancers. Lots of street art decorated every surface in the area and it's a must-see part of Argentina's capital if you're visiting for the first time.

We're on a very wide, cobbled street that curves to the left ahead of us, disappearing behind large, leafy trees to that side of the view. In front of the trees there are stands set up on which there are small paintings or prints on A4 sheets of paper. The right side of the street is bordered by buildings of differing textures shapes and colours. Indeed, the colours are applied in bold and vibrant blocks contrasting doors and window frames with the surrounds that might be smooth or boarded in wood or with corrugated metal sheeting. It's an eclectic, haphazard, chaotic, colourful arrangement that works well with its blues and yellows and greens and pinks and oranges and reds. A couple of ornate iron street lamps stand in front of a few of the buildings and there is one person on the street - a man in jeans and a white t-shirt - walking away from us. It's lightly overcast but feels warm here.

Our visit to Buenos Aires in 2016 coincided with the arrival of the President for the opening of parliament. As a result there were road closures throughout the capital both to facilitate the arrival of official vehicles and to keep the large protest groups away. Our tour that should have largely been by bus ended up being largely on foot through wide roads in the capital city devoid of traffic and often with barricades of police in the distance. A slightly surreal but enjoyable experience.

This is Casa Rosada- the "Pink House" - the Argentine president's official workplace, located at one end of Plaza de Mayo. We never saw any trouble and the police didn't care about couples, individuals, or our obvious tourist group wandering around and passing through barricades. We also didn't see any use of the numerous water cannons that had been set up along one side-street.

We're on a wide road in a city. There are no cars present and we're looking across a T-junction to a large building on the corner with the road in front blocked off by a set of small, black metal bollards linked by chain and by five police officers standing equally-spaced across with a few more in the background. The police are there in a precautionary matter and aren't stopping pairs and individuals from walking around in the background between them and the building. The building is wide but fairly low, mostly over two storeys except for its central section where it reaches three storeys over a huge, arched entranceway. The most notable element of the building is its colour; a pink-red rose colour. The style of the building with more Romanesque-style elements of columns and arches to the left of the archway with later Italianate style to the right suggests this was originally two separate buildings joined. It's an overcast day but it feels warm.

We had a full day's tour while in Buenos Aires at the start of our South American cruise in 2016. This began with a visit to La Recoleta Cemetery. Laid out in a grid pattern like a city with some wide avenues and some side streets between mausoleums, largely of very rich or prominent families in the city, this is most famously the resting place of Eva Perón. An overcast day gave it all a suitably sombre feel for the visit but the large number of stray cats around the place cheered us up.

We're in a cemetery in the middle of a city but with its tiled straight paths between equally-spaced mausoleums there's no sign of that city around. We're looking along a wide path between two rows of mausoleums that ends at a junction across which more spread either side. At the very end there is a tall structure with arched recess into which a stone coffin is raised, all under a sharply-pointed roof supporting three crosses. The mausoleums either side of us - all taller than us - are of different designs and use different stones and colours in their creation; an ornate, polished yellow next to a shiny black tomb on the left contrast well against the largely whites and greys on the opposite side. The path is textured with small, terracotta tiles and there are a couple of small trees further along with a couple of stone benches nearer us. Under the bench on the right there are some bowls of water or food out for animals and a black and white cat is making use of them.

Our third cruise commenced in 2016, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of our first date. This was our first time heading south of the equator and we flew down to join the ship, Star Princess, in Buenos Aires. We would spend an entire day docked in Argentina's capital which meant we could go off on a full day's excursion before the cruise properly began.

This is the view from Buenos Aires on the aft of the ship. The raised structure on the right is the nightclub, accessed via a travelator, and it's where we spent every evening into the early hours.

We're on the top deck of a cruise ship, towards its aft and overlooking some of the deck below which has a hot tub to the right and a large chess board with pieces on it to the left. Three rows of loungers in a small space are behind the chess board. The aft structure of this ship has a raised section mounted on thick supports. We can see one support on the corner, almost directly ahead of us and the angled white section it supports has a row of vertical, blue-tinted windows along its edge facing us, reflecting the scenery behind us. It's a very bright and sunny day, feeing warm here, and the ship is docked at a port we can see off to the left. A large area of bright green lawn meets more industrial buildings with pipes and concrete, scaffolding-like arrangements, and a tall chimney stack painted in white and red hoops like a lighthouse. In the far distance the city sprawls with jagged peaks of skyscrapers reaching towards the patchy blue sky and puffy white clouds.

Our individual cosmos moves within the space we experience as our own. If we wish to expand our space, we must venture into the unknown and transcend the boundaries we have constructed in our minds.

The exhibition SENTIDO COMÚN presents a work created during my residency at Fundación’ace para el Arte Contemporáneo in Buenos Aires. It invites to reflect on the constant transformation of our existence.
