In the face of one of the world’s largest refugee crises, Chad is taking a bold and unexpected approach.
Instead of temporary shelters or short-term aid, the Chadian government is providing land, giving over 1 million refugees the opportunity to grow food, build livelihoods, and contribute to restoring degraded ecosystems.
This initiative isn’t just humanitarian, it’s ecological and economic.
Refugees are using water harvesting techniques to help regenerate drylands, contribute to the Great Green Wall of Africa, and transform barren landscapes into productive farms.
Could this be a new model for global refugee response?

How far are you willing to go for water and firewood?
For us, things are instant, we switch the stove on or turn on a tap and it’s available.
But that’s not the case for everyone.
Women in Manar spent nearly 6–8 hours on average, per day, thrice a week collecting water and firewood. They would walk back home with heavy loads on their heads. This is an average of 800 hours annually just collecting firewood. But as the forests started to whither away, the journey became long and tiresome.
But in a small corner of Champawat district of Uttarakhand, a group of women have led a silent revolution.
Watch the latest documentary to witness how the Van Sahelis of Manar Van Panchayat restored 11.6 hectares of degraded forest land. Bringing groundwater and greenery back to their land, saving the forest as well as something invaluable, time."

Permaculture instructor Andrew Millison journeys to Southern Spain to visit the restored village of La Junquera and the world's first Ecosystem Restoration Community, Camp Altiplano. We meet the movement's founder, John D Liu, and examine the destructive effects of industrial monoculture Almond orchards and the innovative agroforestry systems being developed in this high arid plateau."
